In Wisconsin had to look this up...

There is a $75 annual fee... :(
Statement from the state DOT:

"Why is there a hybrid surcharge in Wisconsin?
The policy reasoning behind having owners of hybrid-electric vehicles pay additional registration fees on their vehicles is that due to the fuel efficiency of such vehicles, the vehicle owner does not pay motor vehicle fuel taxes into the transportation fund in an amount equal to the costs they put on the state's highway sysetm."

I have heard of the "Creation" of a "Mileage Tax". Where you will be taxed on your yearly mileage..

Guess the Job relocation, might have been timed just right....

Yup. In Oregon the more efficient, the more you pay to title and register it.

NJ does not have these fees yet. But I pay more cause it's a truck. Even then it's like 80 a year. I can see the charge for evs but not hybrids. That's paying a penalty for having a fuel efficient vehicle. You are still buying gas like everyone else.

Coming in Texas Sept 1, 2023. NOTE: the initial $400 is because in Texas the initial registration.n is for two years and the renewals thereafter are annually. The legislature is working on a weight based milage tax with credits for fuel taxes paid most likely to be computed based on EPA window sticker accessed by vin#. They got a lot of poop shoveling yet to do. Following is what starts this Sept.
  • EV owners in Texas will have to pay $400 to register their vehicles.
  • Renewal registrations will be $200.
  • Registration fee goes toward highway costs to supplement the gas tax.

As more Texas drivers purchase electric vehicles, Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill that replaces lost gas-tax income. To remedy the situation, Abbott signed the $400 new EV registration bill known as Senate Bill 505, which goes into effect on September 1, 2023.

this week Wifey was in the DMV and somehow it came up that in Ohio whenever you renew your vehicle registration there is a additional fee of $100 for Hybrids and $200 for 'full' electric vehicles. they dont charge you extra when you buy your vehicle, just when you renew as far as i know.

Do they do this where you live?

now i understand that the states are scrambling to maintain their gas tax revenues, as Americans transition to a majority hybrid/full electric fleet gas tax revenue will no longer be able to support road construction and maintenance, the current spending is woefully inadequate as it is. bridges & roads are crumbling ALL over America so obviously they need all the $$ they can get. i can sorta see the logic but disagree with my states math. in Ohio the state portion of the gas tax is $0.385 p/gl. since ive retired i only drive about 5-7k miles per year, at 7k miles = 175 gl = $67.37 in gas tax. why do i have to pay so more to own a less polluting vehicle??

now if i had a full electric that would mean a even more substantial penalty for adopting a technology thats not only good for the planet but is also being pushed BIG TIME by our and other governments. my bother-n-law lives in Florida and you pay a fee up front thats a % purchase price and thereafter you pay the same registration fee as everyone else.

i would institute a system whereby hybrid/electric owners would pay the same fee as everyone else along with some prorated sum based on your yearly mileage totals which could be captured at your annual inspection(if your state does those). not perfect but better than charging me more than what i believe to be my "fair' share.

EV's or Hybrids may be good for your wallet (in the short term), but it's a myth they're good for the planet. In any event, governments need to replace the lost revenue streams they had from gasoline and oil sales, and people are protesting a mileage tax, so be prepared to get "dinged" in other creative ways.

I live in Texas for many reasons but if you read in to my message (LESS GOVERNMENT) you may be surprised at my response.

Texas doesn't. It should. Highways and many other things are funded by gas taxes. As the auto industry (mistakenly) runs away from ICE engines (hyrbrids are the future, we will run out of cobalt faster than oil) the tax base is changing. So change how you tax the base. It's fair.

Sorry, didn't see this response. Thanks for posting. Fully support this. Basic common sense. No need to raise it on hybrids, I still buy gas.

Not so. " Florida does not charge extra registration or use fees for electric vehicles. " Source: Florida EV Tax Credits Guide.

I bought my Hybrid Mav in March and did not pay any extra fee.

However, that may change. From what I understand, it would apply only to PHEVs and BEVs, though.

wow! over $400! does everybody pay that much or just the hybrid/electric vehicle folks? maybe Ohio isnt as bad as i thought.
A lot of the cost is based on the additional RTA tax, which is a small subsection of the 3 biggest counties in Washington. It's to pay for light rail.

I don't think there's an extra charge for hybrids, but I believe there may be for EVs.

Whodathunk that EV's would contribute to rising electricity prices and higher registration fees? But Hybrids that don't need plugged in? Seems a bit backwards. We still live in the era of pay more to save more and if you want to save more at the pump, you are going to make compromises. Like trading in that 3500 with a 5th wheel for an RV and towing a prius, and then hoping you never need the truck for anything else... Just wouldn't work for a lot of people. On the sort of right path... but instead of walking the path it's more like a confused and disoriented wandering in the woods near the path...

Anyways...

One good thing about my state is the DV registration. I pay 90% less the first year and nothing every year after. So instead of $500 up front and per year, I pay $50. And yes, there is an EV fee in this state. Rightly so IMO. They are a luxury - nothing more and nothing less.

This state charges a maximum of $175/year depending on the EV. I’ll find out if they charge additional for Hybrids when my renewal comes up In a few months.

Maybe states should look at EPA mpg ratings and base the taxes (fees) on that. Although Florida doesn't charge an extra tax on hybrids, why should I pay one on my Maverick with an EPA rating of 37 mpg combined, yet, a Hyundai Elantra SE, which has the same EPA rating, wouldn't?
