Yeah
I thought it was a bit off and I am in not in any rush. It does not seem that the sound would be a normal wear issue but something else and he said it wasn't covered under my extended warranty. It is why I posted the question because it does not happen all the time as I think it would if it were the brakes.
The one thing that differentiates the hybrid backing up besides the audio speaker in the front grill, is that the transmission has no reverse gear. Reverse direction is achieved via the M2 drive motor. The engine plays no part and the brakes only apply automatically if a collision is detected for models that have ultrasonic backup sensors. How many miles are on your brakes? What are all of the pad thicknesses? What are the thicknesses of the rotors? I challenge all members to identify this mystery audio acoustical device suggested that dealer service departments refuse to warranty. I'm at a loss.

The Beatles used “sound in reverse”back in 1966 - three years before the original Maverick was introduced…

Does anyone know about or have heard the harmonic whine while in reverse that is supposed to be warning of excessive brake wear.
(Not the beep beep reverse sound
but a whine that sounds even when you are not braking)
In the hybrid? Probably the electric motor. The hybrid uses only that to back up.

Break pads related, get an aftermarket ceramic pads
It's been reported at the Bronco Sport forum

It is not a squeal but a steady high pitched hum or whine. My dealer said it has to do with brakes even though my brakes passed inspection.
Not covered under warranty because it considered part of breaking system and normal use and wear and tear comes into effect. Says it is $900.00
fix to adjust harmonic sensor without doing brakes. If that is true I'll just wait until inspection and replace brakes too.
It's a problem that sometimes occurs on some vehicles. It mostly happens with the initial backing up before everything gets warmed up. Ford had a fix for it on the Bronco sport where they changed some components. They then revised the fix because it didn't work for every vehicle. I believe the rear brakes are similar. If the noise is particularly bothersome and it's still within warranty, go ahead and have it addressed. Ford indicates that some cold braking noise is acceptable. So it may be a judgement call . But if it's really loud. They should fix it. Keep in mind that while the caliper and rotor warranty is 3/36, the warranty on the actual pads is 12/12. If it's the noise I'm thinking of, it may be embarrassing. But it's harmless. In some cases it will disappear on its own. Other times it can be stubborn

I think I remember getting an email from my dealer for life time brake warranty. (Didn't pay attention to details).

I'm not sure it's the brakes it is a hum not a squeal or chirping sound and it doesn't happen all the time. I have no problem paying to replace the brakes but the dealer said it was a harmonic sensor and should be covered under warranty

It won't be a high pitch squeal or chirp in the classic sense, the sound frequency will be lower because it's a different type of vibration it's usually in reverse because the pads don't really seat themselves from that direction because stops in reverse are so slow. It may not be that. But without hearing it. That's my most logical thought

I'm not finding "harmonic sensor" in the service manual, nor "harmonic" for that matter.

If it's under warranty great. Go for it.
I'm afraid you'll be getting a call like - "uh, you know that part we said that was under warranty, that parts not the problem"

To bad you can't video it for 20 sec from wherever makes it loudest and distinct - and upload it.

I would like to do that but it happens irregularly and it might be hard to hear with all the ambient sounds

Again, how many miles are on your Maverick? When the Bronco sport was making the noise, one of the things we replaced were the rubber bushings the caliper bolts slid through. With other vehicles, one of the actual caliper bolts is made to dampen the harmonics. I can't recall off the top of my head if a Maverick caliper bolt is this type of bolt.
