I like most of Jason’s videos, but this is a fear-mongering infomercial puff piece.

Use good oil and change it when it’s supposed to be changed. Engineering will take care of the rest, regardless of drivetrain.

I learned how to make mayonnaise at least. Learned some other stuff too.

Yeah might be if you only start your motor once a month. Takes over 2 weeks for there to be no oil film at all.

Not getting your oil temp up above 212 is a problem for all vehicles. And has been known for decades that FREQUENTLY taking shorts trips is hard on ANY engine. This is not news since hybrids have been around for 20 years. In the video it clearly reads on the screen 80-90% of wear occurs at COLD startups, according to Mobil 1. But the dude making the video only said "at start ups" His felt marker graph also shows a hybrids oil temp dropping from 212 down to 140, during normal driving? Doubtful. Normal oil temp is 240. I have driven my hybrid enough to know the engine is never off long enough for the oil to drop 100 degrees, when I am driving around. Parked for an hour yes. The video is mostly true and good info but it is misleading that this is something to worry about if you own a hybrid. There is no pile of hybrid engines that have died because the water did not get boiled off. ✌

Yeah you'd have to show me significant compression loss, restored some by drizzling oil in the cylinders, at 200k miles to make me even begin to take you seriously, and I would only continue to if there was absolute proof it was never run low on oil.

"80 to 90% of engine wear come from start ups." If that's true, that stupid start/stop feature they tell us is ok, is actually damaging your engine.
it's not the starting itself, but because oil dripped down off the engine as the car cooled. The wear came from metal to metal before the oil got there.

This has been at least heavily ameliorated by synthetic oils: they cling to the metal far longer than conventional oil.

If two otherwise identical vehicles suddenly lose all their oil, the one that had had synthetic oil will take longer to destroy itself than the one that had been filled with conventional (all other things on the oil being equal).

the simple fact that we don't have plenty of reports of hybrids toasting themselves tells us that Ford figured this out and adequately engineered it--leaving them on the road long enough to get rear ended!
😱

more serious, given the manner in which starts cause extra wear, it would likely be early engine death, not a slow process, if it were a problem.

I’m not going to watch the video, don’t need to.
I’m so sick of the scare stories about hybrids. It’s all a bunch of BS.
I’ve been driving hybrids for 18 years. I had 185k miles on my Prius when I drove it to the Junk yard. I just plain wore out the vehicle. Mostly the rusted body and frame. The engine was still amazing. Didn’t burn a drop of oil.

How many vehicles end up in a junk yard because of engine failure? Not many.

Not being a HYBRID owner I didn't know this but I thought I should pass it on. Interesting and informative video. Worth a watch.
I didn't know there was an oil made especially for HYBRIDS.

AI Overview

No, the start and stop of the Ford Maverick hybrid is not hard on the engine, as it's designed to be seamless and uses the electric motor to spin the gas engine up very quickly and smoothly, unlike the more noticeable cranking of traditional starter motors in non-hybrid vehicles. The hybrid system automatically shuts the engine off to save fuel and only restarts it when needed for acceleration or battery charging, and this process is an integral part of the hybrid design to increase efficiency, not a source of excessive wear.

How the Maverick Hybrid's Start/Stop Works
  • Seamless Operation:
Instead of a traditional starter, a powerful electric motor in the eCVT (electronically controlled continuously variable transmission) spins the crankshaft up to running speed, making the engine start-up very smooth.

  • Automatic Control:
The system automatically manages when the gas engine turns on or off based on driving conditions and the charge level of the high-voltage battery.

  • Fuel Efficiency:
The engine shuts off when the vehicle is stopped or decelerating, and the electric motor can be used for initial acceleration from a stop, saving fuel and reducing emissions.
Why It Doesn't Harm the Engine
  • Designed for Efficiency:
The start/stop function is a core component of the hybrid's fuel-saving strategy, so the vehicle is engineered to handle frequent cycling.

  • No Starter Motor Wear:
The Maverick hybrid doesn't rely on a conventional starter motor, which is a source of wear in traditional vehicles.

  • Reduced Idling:
By shutting the engine off instead of idling, the system actually prevents potential issues caused by prolonged idling, such as spark plug problems or residue buildup.

....and it explains why the 2.5L uses DAMB lifters that when properly adjusted and set, will not "tick" on startup until they get oil pumping into them like a standard hydraulic lifter would.

How about the thread that displayed the ice rpm. I do not know what the cycle rate for the RPM reading is but when the ice started the rpm jumped in less than a second from 0 to 810 in his video. If you blinked you would have missed it. Perhaps someone could observe the 3ph starter/generator in action?

Pressed play, "Welcome to this video sponsored by Mobil 1", shut it off... My 2012 Prius V has 202k miles and is running great, I've never used "Hybrid Oil". This is an ad. LOL
