Does your Spray in bedliner cover the top of the bedrail under the rear window? Will tonneau cover still work?

I'm having spray in bedliner done on my Maverick today at a local shop. Someone mentioned to me to make sure the shop does not spray the top of the bedrail under the rear window if you plan on installing a tonneau cover (which I do). The guy at the local shop says they always spray that bedrail otherwise it leaves a sharp sometimes jagged cut line if they don't spray up to the window. He said they've never had an issue with someone installing a tonneau cover afterwards. What do you guys think? I guess the issue might be getting the tonneau cover to seal properly under the window there and getting the weather stripping to stick but again the guy at the shop said it's not an issue.

So if you have a SIBL and a tonneau cover what are your thoughts on this?

Here's a picture I found of a Ford OEM SIBL and it looks like they don't spray that bedrail under the window but in the comments it says most places do. Again my question is if they do spray that bedrail will it mess up the tonneau cover going on and sealing?

You, not the shop guy, have hit the nail on the head. No SIBL along that top edge. You need the smooth surface for the front seal of the tonneau to seal properly.

Interesting and I now see that the Ford OEM spray in liner doesn't cover the top edge of that bed rail but others still say it should be covered. Wondering if anyone here has a SIBL covering that top rail and a tonneau cover and if so how is it working out?

Yes, to second @MavStangVa my factory SIBL does not cover that top rail either.

I have to wonder if the guy at the local shop has much experience with the Maverick. It being a unibody, there is nowhere for water to run off without it seeking to get under a tonneau cover or bed cap first if so equipped. This area needs the best possible seal and that means a smooth surface for the seal.

I just talked to the shop again and they have done tons of Mavericks as they do them for our huge local Ford dealer along with F150's etc. They also sell and install tonneau covers and said they've never had an issue with getting the weather stripping to seal properly in that area with the bedliner sprayed all the way up there. They did say the issue with leaving that top bedrail bare (like the Ford OEM Spray) is that there's a good chance it'll start to peel at some point and that it wouldn't be covered under warranty as a result of that peeling. Not sure what the heck to do as my truck is getting spray today.

It also is somewhat dependant on the cover installed, many of them use drain hoses routed to holes already in the bed to drain water from this area avoiding any increased pressure build up and do successfully seal well. I really have to wonder just how many that do leak never see the spray on the bed header rail as the cause and the shop guy never hears of the problem. Edit: admittedly, from what I've read here, it's pretty common for aftermarket SIBLs to cover the header rail, but then most pick ups are not unibodies. Most people seem to want this area protected, but as your going to be careful of your rear glass most folks don't actually need it.

There's no reason that it would be more prone to peel there than any other masked edge.

Also depends on the tonneau cover. The rolling covers, like my SyneticUSA, many times have the cannister lip bend and over the front bedrail, with double weatherstripping, and a cover over that, which also has another rubber strip that goes into the area between the glass and bed rail.

BTW, the other option rather than caulk, is to double up on the weatherstripping all the way across, and it will likely be watertight. I get absolutely no water along the front edge, or sides, with the only occasional drip on the last 1/8 inch of the bed towards the gate...which might actually be dripping down when I open the tailgate.

with the OEM tri fold cover you COULD just notch out (using a dremel or some oscillating tool) some of the spray in material where it gets attached to the rail - it's like a 3-4" long aluminum piece that rides on the rail - also on the pull downs at the back (they give you a couple little plastic things that you attach to the rails) you'd have to notch out a similar (though I think it's more like 2") little section. Besides that you should be fine.

The weatherstripping that came with my SyneticUSA was neoprene closed cell(?) type material. The compressible window sealing stuff that's an inch or so wide, and adhensive on one side would basically be the same stuff.

Something like this: Weather Stripping

The stuff you tried isn't for rain, more a draft stopper, and totally porous.

You are overthinking it. Mine is sprayed right up to the window and I have no leaks in that area from my tonneau cover.

My '25 XLT Hybrid came with a spray in belligerent but it was not listed on the vehicle invoice. I assume that it was an aftermarket SIBL. The bed top rail was sprayed but the foam included with my BAK MX4 stuck to it nicely. I drove through a heavy rainstorm two days ago for two hours. I checked that bed after I arrived at my location and there were absolutely no leaks. NOTE: During the initial installation I put a light in the bed to look for areas that could leak and added small pieces of the leftover seal in the front corners. I did NOT seal the tailgate area YET as the rain did not enter these areas during the rain. I will put a tailgate seal soon as I am certain water will leak there when washing the vehicle. I hope my dealer doesn't see this post as they forgot to charge for the spray in liner!

Spell check changed spray in spray in bedline to belligerent
