Part of the heavy steering has to be the less-than-optimum OEM tires that come on every vehicle. That was noted on a test of the Lobo that popped up today, tires were it's biggest downfall.

I was quite surprised when I replaced the OEM's on an Escape with a tire that was rated about the same as the Michelin Cross Climate at how responsive the steering became. I'm too cheap to throw out my Pirellis that came on my Mav, but will replace them with a better tire before they are completely gone.

Steering resistance = torque steering?
torque steering is the pull to the side under heavy throttle. Clockwise on American cars, and counter-clockwise on British. (a function of which wy the motor spins).

I used to use it to get out of the driveway in winter when living in a 100 year old house.

I'd pick up enough speed to coast/slide to the top of the alley before I hit the ice, and gunned the engine on the ice t the top to spin the car enough to he'd downhill.

Looks like it’s time for a gym membership, ElderChuck.
My $400 law school car, a '71 Fury III wagon, developed a bad power steering leak. Filling in the morning didn't leave it full enough coming home 12 hours later, and it would cut in and out.

I finally threw up my hands and left it dry, getting an upper body workout each way.

Do you usually enable SPORT mode? The owner's manual says:

"For sporty driving with improved performance handling and response. This mode increases throttle response and provides a sportier steering feel."

Why wouldn't you just say what tire you bought? Something way off-brand from Walmart?

Was this in the 2022 manual? Later revisions of the manual don't state anything specifically about steering feel:

Yes, it's in the 2022 manual. I wonder if Ford changed the power steering logic or just the text in the manual.

I would suspect only the text changed. There really weren't any significant design changes that I'm aware of 2022-2024.

Firestone Weathergrip but my point was any tire rated much the same as the Cross Climate would probably show the same result. (And yes, I did order them through WalMart for convenience.)

Some reviewers say leave the OEM tires on the Lobo for more fun - easier to “break loose”:)

The Lobo does use a tighter ratio steering rack than the other Mavericks. It is a “performance-tuned” steering rack sourced from the European-market Ford Kuga(Escape).

The steering feels tight tight tight but not heavy at all. I do use lane keep assist - but that is a different type of feeling,

I would call it tight, but not stiff. I prefer it.

I noticed the same thing but I believe it is the trucks anti colision system influencing the steering. I know it also does that when getting to close to the shoulder of the road.
