Dealer Oil Change

Many years ago when I was an airframe mechanic, 95% of the aircraft were in corporate fleets, but the 5% of personal aircraft, with a smaller subset of those that had to micromanage and watch their baby going through an inspection or other maintenance drove me insane. I think it's good to have an understanding of your vehicle, and being able to communicate vehicle problems with mechanics / service writers, but once it's dropped off you have to trust them to do their job or what's the point really.

The only thing I know about planes is my nephew paints them. Full time for military construction. Then on days off he paints dings on private planes. Makes good money and the manager of that airport is after him to quit full time job and will build him a hanger to paint in. apparently he is really good!

Yeah, he was told to kiss off.............. I have had four oil changes at my dealership. None over $100 with full synthetic and tire rotation. Longest it took was 1 hour and 15 minutes. I am there when they open and have an appointment. There are good apples and then the bad apples..........

They stripped the oil drain threads during a $400 oil change, big puddle under it the next day. They insisted that they didn't do anything, that she must have stripped those threads,

How the heck do you strip the threads on that? they must have put the bolt on with an impact tool.
Doesn't take a genius to know you always start a bolt or nut by hand and the oil drain plug doesn't need to be that tight. BMW = Buy More Worries

start with the wrong bolt by not paying attention?

Only ford dealers had changed my oil for some years on my e-150 when I started doing it--and I noticed right off that they'd rounded the bolt!

That would almost be laughable except, states that still have scam vehicle inspections, that's part of their "safety" checklist also.

If you saw the condition of many of the cars that fail those inspections from the Mechanical Nightmare and Just Rolled Into The Shop YouTube channels, you'd wish your state had those inspections too.

NOPE, NO WAY IN HELL.
Somehow 36 states make due without inspections.

Just for comparisons sake....I am having the lower control arms replaced on my wife's 2018 Odyssey at my local mechanic.

Honda quoted $1,700 for both control arms. He is doing it for $820.

My 2025 Lariat AWD Hybrid has 5,300 miles on it and I said to him that I am an avid member on MTC and that there are reports of blackened and short filled PTU and RDU fluids and how much would he charge to drain and refill both, and rotate my tires for me while doing it?

He said, "Does $100 sound fair?"

"Sure...I'll pay a little more if you'll measure what comes out vs. what goes in and take a picture of the break in fluid?"

"Yep. $100"

EDIT: Granted it might not be just $100 if for not doing the control arms (and a bunch of other work) on ultra reliable (heavy sarcasm) Hondas and Subarus over the years. Doesn't mine going the extra mile to measure what comes out and take photos of what does - that is the difference to me. I'd pay twice as much because of his service.

Please let us know the results you get from the PTU and RDU fluid changes as I haven't seen anyone with a 25 AWD Hybrid post that they've have this done yet (all were EB AWD's that I saw). Also excuse my ignorance but what is RDU (rear drive unit maybe)? I'm wondering why the reports of blackened and short filled fluids? I just bought a 25 AWD Hybrid a few weeks ago so I'm very interested in seeing what you find out.

The only reason the dealer will be doing my first oil change is because it is free, after that I will be doing them myself.

That's a lot of money for an oil change.
I got a new 2024 Hybrid Lariat and I went to my local stealership to get the door key pod programmed since they forgot to do it. While I was waiting for about 30 minutes, I was in disbelief to see how many workers (about five) were just waiting for customers to drop their vehicles. It looked like the sales department, a bunch of salesman waiting for costumers. And inside, there was at least another 8-10 service advisors.

Its a huge stealership and Not my business BUT it got me wonder where does the money for their payroll comes from?
Surely after I asked the service tech about how the cost for an oil chance on my Mav, he said $150. And I responded, man, do you have to removed the engine? He said that the price of the oil alone was $88, a blend, not even full synthetic.

I'll be doing my oil changes. I already got a Kirkland full synthetic oil at Costco for about $28 per case (special).
Also, I live in Florida and we have Discount Tires stores. They do a full tire rotation for free, yes free. They have to pay salaries to their workers so I opted for a lifetime tire rotation instead, a cool $150. Plus I always tipped the guys. They are very courteous and respectful.

Ford stealerships are crazy expensive. This is my first Ford in over 25 years.
Not, Subarus, Hondas, Toyota or Nissan charge that much for an oil change, what a ripoff from Ford stealerships.

The part that suck is that, if you are not handy, injured, older or don't have a place to do the work yourself, you are at their mercy and are stuck at paying $200 for an oil change, sad.

Yeah it is unfortunate that Ford doesn't allow any certified ASE mechanic to work on their vehicles......

Good lord. Around me, the "Works" (including tire rotate) is usually about $80, and I apply 8000 FordPass points ($40) to reduce the out of pocket. A few weeks ago, Ford had a $25 rebate available, got the Visa debit card in the mail last week. The current promotion I see posted is now a $20 rebate.

In all fairness, I perhaps I should have broken it down a bit. And there were 3 service offerings, I chose the cheapest option, and it totaled $190 not $200 as follows:

Labor $75
Waste Fee $1.72
Filter $11.80
Oil $55.74
PM*44*A 44K $34.46 (had to look that up, some kind of injector cleaner)
Washer solvent $3.65
Tax $8.19

I took a pass on some services now classified as 'postponed':
Engine Crankcase Cleaning
180 day comp roadside care
Premium engine oil conditioner
Premium fuel system conditioners

I just let this one roll. I may have been able to say 'just oil and filter' please, since manufacture says first service 10K. As I waited, it was just under 2 1/2 hours. But don't know tech actual start and stop times.

It'll take me a year to 'use' this oil, and I'll likely be just over 10K. Since that's an official factory service interval I'll likely go back. At 75 I'm not interested in changing my own oil any more. But I will shop services before landing.

Yeah.... I haven't had the time to do my own oil changes in a while so I have it done. My usual theory is to try to have service done at dealer during the warranty period and then after that I go somewhere else. Yeah I know, not needed but that's what I like to do.

With the Maverick though since it's recommended oil changes are 10K miles I have gone to the dealer for the 10K intervals, but at the 5K intervals (5, 15, 25, etc) I go to a little shop next to work that is very good and oil and is about half the price.
