My wife's 2019 Accord hybrid, 2.0 has a 10.3:1 CR and requires at a minimum 87 octane gas.

The Mavericks 2.5 hybrid has 13.0:1 CR and requires at a minimum 87 octane gas.

She uses midgrade in the Accord and at about 5,000 miles a year, the added cost is minimal. I will probably do the same in the Maverick.

Fyi ethanol will void your warranty. Unless its a flex fuel system. That the mav is not

I’m looking for someone with intimate knowledge about engines to answer a couple questions for me. I’ve been researching Atkinson motors and learning about how they work. I’ve found that the Atkinson motor used has a compression ratio of 13:1 which is pretty high. So I would think premium fuel with a higher octane would work better. However, reading about the Atkinson motors I discovered that lower octane is recommended because the ignition rate works better with the natural cycle. So…

-Would running a low octane fuel with more ethanol produce a more efficient engine?
-Will premium work better or get more power or will it just knock?
-Any ideas to get more power out of the hybrid engine?

But the 2.5 is an Atkinson, so it uses no more than 90% of that 13:1, and as little as half.

So is the 2.0.

Reply #106, I was referring to our Accord, the 2.0 in the Accord is an Atkinson.
The 2.0 is indeed an Atkinson Cycle engine for the accord.

I think you're wasting money putting 91 in it. You aren't seeing an increase in fuel economy.

You are correct, but it is what my misses wants and it makes her happy. Sometimes we have to bite a bullet and this is one of those times.

I believe the Atkinson cycle leaves the intake valves open during the compression cycle for a short time. IN essence, this lowers the compression ratio on the intake stroke vs the exhaust stroke. I'm no expert but this might be answer your question.

If you ordered a hybrid, it was to save money by getting great mileage. Why would you want to pay for high octane gas if they reccomend regular?

Because my original question explained that a higher octane gas could possibly create a better gas mileage and power due to the combustion cycle
