I very much miss the ol' hand brake in between the seats.

Older Prius vehicles (not sure about new) use an electronic brake for the rear brakes and manual master cylinder for the fronts as a backup. It seems Ford only uses electronic braking for all four wheels which means no manual reversion should the electronic system fail.

The following is from Peake & Fowler Law Firm, Columbia, SC commenting on NHTSA reports.
So to feel 20 again I only need to make it to 65?

No. That's not true.

Every car on the road. EVERY ONE needs to (and is able to) apply the hydraulic brakes by physically pumping the brake pedal. I'm sure in some weird way that too could fail, but it wouldn't be computer or lack of electricity related.

Try this:

In a SAFE open area, like far end of a big parking lot away from others, get up to 20 mph. Put it in Neutral. Shut off engine, turn key off, push the off button in the others. You will be able to stop.

It will take effort, but the manual physical brakes will stop you. Or they should.

If not:
A) crap in pants
B) restart vehicle
C) apply the brakes again

I have never ever pushed the electric parking brake button with the vehicle in motion. I am skeptical it will do anything above 5 mph. But I don't know. I currently have a trailer attached so I won't be experimenting with that this weekend.

I really do hope that if there is a problem, the NHTSA is on top of it.
They've experienced impactful layoffs lately. I found a four percent figure, but unsure if that was the final total and what their roles were.

You pull up on it actually. I've not tried pushing on it, but I don't think that works.

You really should experiment with it and be familiar with it in case you ever need it. It works at any speed. If you've ever experimented with using a hand brake in a car, you will likely be shocked at how effective the electric brake in the Maverick is. It gives very good power and control without locking up on pavement.

Did the shop give you any more insight to what "imploded" means here? I'm assuming that was just a term of convenience to describe an electrical fault that kept the system from working, rather than something mechanical breaking (but not braking).

Please do let us know what the dealer says failed. I preferred the older style e-brake that is a mechanical mechanism and was was easy to reach, and pull even when you might be panic'd. Sometimes simple just works. It may not be pretty, or fit in with the design esthetic but it has a purpose. Glad no one was hurt and I hope this incident was filed. We can't be fooling around with brake issues.

Why be skeptical of your owner's manual?

Applying the Electric Parking Brake in an Emergency

You can use the electric parking brake to slow or stop your vehicle in an emergency.
Pull the switch up and hold it.
The red warning lamp illuminates, a tone sounds and the stoplamps turn on when you use the electric parking brake in an emergency.
The electric parking brake continues to slow your vehicle down unless you release the switch.
Note: Do not apply the electric parking brake when your vehicle is moving, except in an emergency. If you repeatedly use the electric parking brake to slow or stop your vehicle, you could cause damage to the brake system.

The manual states the parking brake lever can also be used periodically for a short time. That is assuming the manual lever does not go thru the same modules. In a panic it is also hard to remember this unless the parking brake is used on a regular basis.

It's an electrical button.
And I push it towards the rear.
Try it. It works.

Pulling buttons is crazy.

If the police were called out to the incident and they had to handle the report for an accident they just have to make sure that the roadway is clear of the vehicles involved.
If one of the drivers requested a tow of their vehicle and doesn’t have a tow company to call then the police dispatcher will call the next tow service on the call list to come out.
The police don’t tell the driver not to drive the vehicle it’s the owners decision whether to have it towed or drive it home or wherever.
If you are crazy enough to drive the vehicle with failed or faulty brakes then it your choice.
