Hybrid fuel mpg

I'm happy with my mileage. Today I traveled 160 miles with 650 pounds in the bed, three people in the cab. 59 mph, cruise set in normal mode, except through small towns and got 45 mpg. Mostly flat with gentle sloped hills. edit: load was 1000 pounds. Just weighed it at unloading.

Got mine in mid Jan. Winters are always hard on mileage anyway.
My commute has been my guide.
Early on I was happy with the new ride, but since the display tells you every time you stop, I was not entirely thrilled with 38mpg to work. Patience......
Basically its 15 miles out and back. Not an ideal commute for mileage. Kinda midway between city with battery always, yet too many stops to get a nice steady drive.
As the days have warmed up and the car breaks in (still only at 2500) mpg has improved.
The slightly down hill to work is now routinely 46+, uphill on the way back, maybe 41. I tend to stop for more errands on the way home, so not as much repeatability there.
Best so far , a short hop which I'm fairly sure is downhill , 55+.
I have not had a chance for a long highway trip yet. We stuck with the new Subaru for the adaptive cruise control on the last trip. The Sub got 35mpg, the MAV on the interstate is not supposed to be much different. As mentioned elsewhere, we are driving a refrigerator as aerodynamics go.
I am quite amazed at how few times I am filling it compared to my old beaters.

Those higher speed limits really don't take into consideration fuel usage, and instead are about getting from A to B faster.

The EPA was running an experiment in which they had drivers travel the length of Nebraska on I-80 at 55.

They had to shut it down early, after the first five drivers died of boredom!

Over the past 5 days I have driven down 71 to Cincinnati from NW Columbus and back - roughly 275 mile round trip - 4 times.

I drove between 70-85 mph (with most miles drive between 72-77mph) and I never broke 30mpg on any trip.

I've come to grips with the fact the Maverick cannot achieve stated fuel economy.

Explain why mine routinely gets 48-52 mpg In suburban driving. The worst it got since new is 38 mpg between Michigan and Tucson. Remember, the hybrid gets its best mileage in stop and go driving where there’s an opportunity to regenerate. You don’t slow down much on the interstate so there’s no regenerat. I don’t think the electr motor even contributes above 65 mph.

Look in the mirror and you’ll see why you can’t get better than 30 mpg.

My road trip I was at a consistent 75+ mph for hundreds of miles and that mpg average is way less. I averaged 26 mpg on the way there and 27 mpg on the way back. My lifetime average so far for all of my 1500 miles is 30.1.

My 2024 Ecoboost Lariat on a recent 300 mile mostly flatland Interstate run at 75-80 mph did 30 mpg.

My normal driving in my Appalachian Mountains at 65 mph or less with altitudes ranging from 1,300 feet to 1950 feet elevation is holding at 27 mph. I expect my averages to settle around 28 when I’m fully ‘broken in’, at say, 5,000 or 6,000 miles

Total bullshit. In reality, most cars run under the limit, and the higher the limit, the higher the percentage of cars that run under the limit.

You haven't driven freeways out west where you go up to summits and down into valleys. With cruise control set and Economy mode and EV Coach setting on the downhill side it goes into electric only and regenerative charging which more than makes up for what the battery sends to the electric motor. The Maverick does great at 80mph. On our last trip back from my mother's memorial service in Salt Lake City we averaged 35.9 mpg over the 300 mile distance, on freeway at 80mph for most of the way.

We stay at the limit, or a couple above when the majority of the traffic is running 82. You must go with the flow or create a hazard. We use the adaptive cruise control to keep us properly spaced when traffic gets heavier. We still get passed by people going faster than 80 (likely 85 to 90) mostly with California and Colorado plates. Even semis go 80 here. If a driver goes 60-65 on the freeways here they literally create a safety hazard as people run up on them unexpectedly.

With any vehicle, and this one is no different, there is a mostly normal distribution of fuel economy results.

You are at X.

I am at Y.

Why? Multiple factors. Least of which is the vehicle itself. Greatest of all, is the driver and the routes they drive.

Example:

I have a route shaped like a doorstop.
Steep on one side of the hill, and gradual on the other.

Nearly sea level on both ends.
I actually looked it up on USGS topo maps.

20 ft to 760 ft to 20 ft.

The "physicist" doing a mind experiment only will say the fuel used in either direction will be the same, excluding wind and weather effects.

I will tell you FOR SURE and will bet pink slips, with a hybrid it is MUCH more advantageous, repeatable 30 times in a row, more advantageous, to do the steep side first. 20% less fuel is burned doing the steep side first.

Repeatable. Provable. Due to many factors. Small battery being an important one.

This is just one example of what I mean by exact route can make a big difference.

Drove my 2024 Hybrid maverick 200 miles today It has 950 miles on it now. Drove most of it at 80mph. I got a average of 34.8mpg.
Is this normal for a hybrid with under 1k miles?

Do most of you get a calculated mpg close to displayed mpg?

I try to keep my freeway speed between 60-65 and average between 45-50 MPG. The hybrid gets it's economy by letting the battery do work, and at 80 it isn't working much.

confirm - at 65-70mph I will get about 40mpg.
Getting nearly 35mpg at 80mph is honestly pretty good..
my 2009 Honda Fit would average 40mpg travelling at 65mph, at 80mph it would drop to mid-30s.
So much the same result.. air resistance increases as the square of the speed, so the extra few mph really increases the drag..
