Update: finally got so far as to reinstall - all the pitch bolts were loose, so all pillars were moving freely and in the wrong places on the bars. cranked down on the bolts until the tool was twisting, they still loosen very easily with the tool. Used some blue Loctite on all the pitch bolt...
