The original federal highway speed limit of 55mph was enacted in the mid 70s during the oil crisis to reduce fuel consumption. States have the right to enact their own speed limits outside of the federal limit, which they do. Those higher speed limits really don't take into consideration fuel usage, and instead are about getting from A to B faster.

As shown above, highway fuel efficiency numbers are based upon speeds far lower than the 75-80 discussed in this and the many other threads on this topic.

You sir, are the poster child for EXACTLY what it's gonna get at 80mph on the highway. No more...No less. But hey, when you think about it, how many vehicles can you get 35 mpg at 80 in?? Not too many. Mavericks rock!
Keeping it between 72-80 mph the last over 900 miles in the last 4 days I average 29mpg. Must have been going down hill the entire time to clip 35mpg at 80mph.

Drove my 2024 Hybrid maverick 200 miles today It has 950 miles on it now. Drove most of it at 80mph. I got a average of 34.8mpg.
Is this normal for a hybrid with under 1k miles?
You should keep it under 70 for the first 1k miles. Kinda late now, though.

At 80mph, your mileage will be shit. You're pushing the aerodynamic equivalent of a refrigerator down the highway. All gasoline-only trucks get crap mileage at that speed .
Above 60, the Electric mode is all but not being used. You're driving with the gas engine only.

I usually get upper 30s on the highway. Hilly & city driving is usually between mid 40s and mid 50s. Less in city driving in cold weather, bc the heater uses the gas engine a lot, when otherwise I'd be driving in Electric-only mode.

Use the EV Coach and see how little you are probably driving Electric mode. Use the Brake Coach to see how little you are probably using regenerative braking to recharge the battery while slowing down/stopping. Hard braking has to use the brake pads, instead of regen-only.

No it doesn't. If I drop down to 65mph it may get 31mpg on the highway.

In the City I drive as conservative as possible and right to the speed limit and I have never averaged above 37mpg.

It's still great MPG, it just is not the stated MPG.
I would be concerned. I've never heard of any Maverick hybrid owners not achieving better than stated epa mileage. I'm sure you're not alone, but it's certainly unusual.

There are lots of 2025 owners nowhere close to the stated rating. I have had 1 fill up (180 miles) that I achieved 39.7mpg in city driving only, but my total combined rating is well off the combined rating of 37mpg.

I have come to terms with it. Instead of saying "it doesn't get 37mpg like it is supposed to" I am pivoting to - this thing is AWD, can tow 4K lbs, 1400+ lb payload capacity....AND it gets almost 32mpg.

When your vehicle is getting crappy mileage, check your tire pressures, it's better to run tires at max pressure for mileage, although it might wear more in the center of the tread, the other is an alignment, sometimes there might be an alternate set of measurements for better mileage, I'm no expert, but just a few of what I have learned when I was frequently visiting Ecomodder (dot) com when I owned a C-Max.

The original poster with the 2025 probably has his tire pressure set in “the range” and he’s not getting crappy mileage. He’s getting what would be expected from doing 80 miles an hour on the freeway. I would call his post normal for what he’s saying.

Well all wheel drive and 4K towing does add weight to the vehicle, so we're not comparing apples to apples. But I'm sure it will improve when you have a larger sample of miles and fuel runs in different conditions. It's still pretty darn good for a small pickup. The best I could do with my 2011 Ranger on the highway was 23 mpg with just me in it and an empty box and 2 wheel drive.

I make regular all-interstate drives of 350 to 450 miles. My average at 77 is anywhere from 32 to 37 depending on wind strength and direction. 33 to 34 is most common. Got a 39 coming home from Amarillo to Dallas but had a tailwind and was running Buc-ee's zero ethanol.

I've read a few reports on here of fuel economy getting better after the 1st oil change. Are you still running the factory oil?

Over the past 5 days I have driven down 71 to Cincinnati from NW Columbus and back - roughly 275 mile round trip - 4 times.

I drove between 70-85 mph (with most miles drive between 72-77mph) and I never broke 30mpg on any trip.

I've come to grips with the fact the Maverick cannot achieve stated fuel economy.
Maybe its YOU.
🤷🏻‍♂️

I get 53 MPG in the city and 44 MPG driving all freeway at 5 over the speed limits.

Highway/High speed EPA fuel economy test involves reaching speeds of 80mph and over 70mph multiple times.

When I drive 65mph (5 mph under the posted speed limit) I cannot hit 33mpg on the highway.

For "mixed use" where I have driven probably 65% city / 35% highway over 2,909 miles my hand calculated MPG (Fuelly) is 31.6 MPG.
Somethings wrong.

It's probably you.

Could be crappy gas though.

I honestly don’t take any of these claims seriously unless you can back it up with Fuelly. I think a lot of you guys see 40-50-60 mpg trips (over 5-7 miles) and believe that is your actual true fuel economy.

The 2025 struggles big time to meet the EPA ratings. Hard stop.

Slow down, hot rod! Yeah, I know, not as easy as it sounds.
I recently drove to meet some friends way up in northwest Wisconsin, 400 miles. Told myself I was going to do 65mph for milage. Lasted 15 minutes- couldn't stand going so slow.
