'23 Hybrid, 43k miles. Get off work one night, truck throws Powertrain Malfunction, Reduced Power, Service Engine errors at me through the FordPass app.

Well I'm outside the bumper to bumper warranty, but still inside the Powertrain warranty, and that's where the errors are, so we good, right? Limp it to the dealership, drop it off.

They call me two days later, tell me the 12v battery has gone bad, not enough power on the 12v system causing sensors to malfunction and produce phantom errors. The fix is to replace 12v battery and reset BMS. Bad battery not covered under powertrain warranty, so that'll be $812 please.

I tell them politely to pound sand. Still charged me a $400 diagnostic fee. Spent $200 on a new battery and swapped it out and reset the BMS in 20min. So I'm still up $200 I guess? But the truck is still in limp mode.

How should I proceed? Can I get the truck out of limp mode with some kind of cheat code (like the BMS reset) or an ODB device I could get off the Internet?

So frustrated with Ford right now.

An OBD2 tool is a must for modern vehicles, imo. Worth having to pull the codes. You can also go to the local auto store to pull the codes.

When you reset the BMS, did you get the required flashes on the instrument cluster confirming the reset? And did you leave it locked for 8 hours after that to recalibrate?

Hopefully you got an AGM battery of the largest capacity and size that would fit.
$800. And $400 diagnostic fee !
You owe it to your fellow countrymen to go very public and do not stop until you get a full refund.
Hire a bunch of kids to stand out in front of that POS stealership with signs and all for a few days at the very least.
Get a letter on its way to Ford Corporate ASAP !

Let that dealer feel your furious wrath.

$400 diagnostic, then to add insult to injury they didn't take it out of limp mode. Wow, this raises the bar. Wish I could advise if Forscan will do it. Sure someone on the forum knows.

Cheers.

Exactly what happened to my 2022 with 38,000, currently getting a new Engine installed.

Did they even diagnose the Powertrain Malfunction error. Mine was P1061.
You might find a new dealer, though I'd also get that $400 back if it is indeed the Engine Failure issue.

I Definitely recommend using the Ford Pass app to have it towed to the dealer, mine wouldn't go over 25mph or make it up a hill. Since doing that, Ford has a rep assigned to my case and they regularly call me and the dealer keeping track of the repair. It also helped me get a loaner vehicle, as the dealer at first said they didn't have one. After Ford got involved, they magically had a 2025 Bronco Sport loaner ready a few days later.

File a report with NHTSA. It takes 5 minutes. We need to force a recall on this ancient issue. That's total BS you had to pay for their shit. I'm just about through with battery number 2 with a 10 months old vehicle among other issues. If that were me I'd park it in front of the dealer with signs all over it. I feel like they are waiting out the warranty with bandaid fixes so you have to pay. This is the first ford I've owned in 40 years and it hasn't changed.

Better yet, go Tesla on their ass! FLAME ON! JUST KIDDING. They did screw you over. Talk to a manager maybe, tell him you would like to continue business with the dealership, but.... Tell him you're not sure now how you can recommend this dealer to some friends who are considering a FORD purchase right now, especially with the new Employee Pricing. Carrots first. BIG ass stick later. Good luck!

This is the first ford I've owned in 40 years and it hasn't changed.
I’ve owned seven Fords over the past 45 years.
My 2021 Bronco Sport had four recalls when new but I got one of the very first off the line.

No problems with my Other Fords at all.

Other than that over the years my five Toyota’s had just as many but more expensive problems.
My eight Mopar’s were all fix at home problems.
And my four Camaro’s and my most loved 1969 Impala were trouble free.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here. But it is my experience that in the past and now, that shapes it. Once the last issue is finally resolved after 4 years, I will let it go. Until then, I will challenge them. Maybe then they will clean up quality. Facts are they are number 1 in Recalls. They by far have the best looking trucks.

Wow! You’ve had more vehicles than ‘Carter has pills’, 😆 Is that a saying in the U.S. or just Canada?

I'm a big fan of reporting to NHTSA to put the heat on from the government. But as far as quality goes, that's costing Ford money. Boy do they know about it. The CEO has been publicly apologizing for several years now (to investors, not customers) because fleet warranty costs are literally costing the company billions a year. Billions, not millions.

Then you add in a $127 million fine from our friends at NHTSA for failing to fix cameras. It starts adding up.
