So, finally happened to me on an April 18 2022 build date XLT Hybrid

Drove a little over 500kms on Saturday, concluding with the arrival back home at 11:36PM

At 2:53AM i got a deep sleep notification.

Already had 96k kms service booked in for Monday, (today) in addition to the backup camera recall.

Upon arrival this morning, asked them to have a look at the battery due to this.

Got a call on my lunch that it would be in the sum of $500 CAD repair, and that they would replace the battery "with the same".

After grumbling, the service guy on the phone said he cannot "confirm nor deny if the battery going in is one that is known to be defective".

Turns out, it was not in fact the same (thankfully) and it appears to be the battery from 2025s that has gone in. Motorcraft BAGM H4 S60-Y is what it lists on the service detailed invoice.

I was a little miffed this was not covered under the electrical drive components warranty but apparently that is "high voltage components only"

Anyway, this is the 1500th dollar I've put in in 3 years of ownership that was not directly related to standard maintenance. Doesn't seem too bad to me. Brakes around 85k kms and battery at 96k kms. Battery less than ideal but at least it is now an AGM battery that is in there. They told me it has a 2 year warranty on the work completed and if ford does in fact issue a recall for this work, I'll very likely be compensated.

YOU PAID $500 FOR A 12V BATTERY???

My dude, you can get an AGM shipped to your home without core return for around $130, and it's a drop in replacement with better stats.

The "parts" cost is listed at 322 CAD

OEM battery as i could find it is 200 ish USD, so that checks out these days

It was already at the dealership, I was at work with the intent to drive it home that night from there, it's done with now. Certainly not ideal but electrical systems are typically something I avoid fucking with

Agreed. I was going to chime in that you live in Canada, so your costs are different from ours. Glad you got it done!

Just FYI it's not the high voltage battery. It's the normal 12v that every car has had for decades.

It's your money I just get triggered when people overspend. PTSD from being poor in a past life.

I've been poor, too, and I get it, but electrical stuff is just something I don't touch. Even in past vehicles I've always gotten my batteries done at the shop, even if i could save money by not doing so. It's just one thing I'll never be able to get over, I have an unhealthy respect for electricity

I wonder why you had to do your brakes so soon, hybrid brakes should last much longer than that.

Not using my L mode, driving too close to folks in traffic, spending too much time in Toronto

It was just the back ones as well, the front just got lapped

That's messed up. Do you ride the brakes or stop really hard all the time? I expect my Hybrid brakes to go about 200k before I replace them.

I wouldn't say so, i was a little surprised as well, but I certainly was not babying them nor was i rolling into stops, so that's likely why

Also am near daily in cities where people stop abruptly

That's very strange the battery packed it in after not even 3 years, they typically last 5-7 years, I know it's cold where you are (I'm in Toronto), but still you should have got more out of it.
Next time go to Costco, get a battery, even if you don't do it yourself, Costco will do it way cheaper than Ford.

And your brakes too? The rears typically last longer because you get most of your stopping power from the fronts..

When my 12 volt was replaced under warranty (one year old, less than 10k miles), my experience with the dealer did not give me the impression that they were "up to speed" on the issues relating to the 12 volt system in the Mav. My car was in the shop for 2 or 3 days while they tried to sort out some of the symptoms which I reported to them. Only after discussions with Ford about my issues they were told to give me a new AGM battery.
My point here is that, "yes, it is a good idea to trust the experts", I wish that I could have more confidence with the dealers' expertise.

Do some searches in the forum - or just read some battery related threads.
You wouldn't find it strange then for hybrids.
Actually really good!

I didn't think the 12 volt battery in a hybrid should last less than a 12 volt battery in an ICE. Here's what AI said when I asked it the question......

12 Volt Battery Lifespan in Hybrids

The lifespan of a 12-volt battery in a hybrid vehicle can be longer than that in an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle due to the hybrid's design and the way it manages power. In hybrids, the traction battery keeps the 12-volt battery charged, reducing the strain on it.1 Additionally, hybrids have a deep cycle and AGM design for their 12-volt batteries, which helps them last longer.1 However, the lifespan can vary based on usage and environmental conditions. For instance, in more temperate areas, a typical 12-volt battery might last 5-6 years, whereas in hotter regions like Arizona or Texas, the lifespan could be shorter, around 3 years.3
In summary, while a 12-volt battery in a hybrid can last a very long time due to the vehicle's design, its lifespan can still be influenced by similar factors as in ICE vehicles, such as usage and environmental conditions.

Interestingly, Costco does not have a suitable battery. Interstate, small dealers, GM, Nissan and Toyota all have T4R size in EFL and AGM batteries.
