I've never been a gambler, but that's exactly what this used car market is like right now, and its the entire reason I ordered a Maverick in the first place since I could cash in my 2015 Mazda for a good chunk of money. The question is, when to actually get rid of it? Do I sell it now while the market is hot and buy a cheap used vehicle (I also have a motorcycle I can commute on (and I live in FL so winter weather is not an issue)) or do I keep driving my Mazda until my Maverick eventually comes in and hope the market remains the same? I'm a September order so I don't even have a build date yet, but I'm considering once I do get a build date, start shopping the sale of my Mazda... And then of course comes the production delays, etc...

This is why I don't gamble...

It really depends on your circumstances. I sold my Jeep back on June 10th for a great price but having a single vehicle has only been a slight inconvenience since we're both retired. If my Maverick is delayed much into next year I might just forget about it.

The Used Car Market is hot right now, and it will continue to be hot until the chip and supply chain issue is fixed. Even if the chip and supply chain is fixed the prices of used cars will not drop like a rock. I'm not seeing either to be fixed any time soon. So I would wait it out, take care of the car. Our 2018 Honda CR-V is worth more than what we paid for it.

IF your car is working well has no issues, keep driving it.

I saw a $3k price drop on offers from companies buying cars from summer until Oct. At one time I had an offer of $18k for my F150 but I had not made a decision on what I wanted as a replacement nor anything to drive in the meantime. Prices came back around and I jumped on an offer of $15k. I still made more than what I paid for it and bought a Mav off the lot the next week.
If you have transportation to get you by I would keep a weekly eye on the market and strike when the offer is hot.

I am also in the same boat, slightly
I am trying to gauge when to sell my 2006 Ranger
I do have another car to drive, so it's not critical, of course I don't even have a build date yet so won't be any time soon I think.

I think this is the case, I think the used market will stay hit. Inflation and other bs, and prices might stay high into next year.

I would advertise it now and stick to your price, that gives you time to tell low ballers to take a hike. If you get what you want for it, sell it and enjoy your motorcycle until your Mav shows up.

It's all market-driven, here in Phoenix, CarMax offered 27K for our CR-V, and 57K for my M5. Last week, CR-V was at 28.5K and M5 is at 60K.

a wise man once said "never try to time the market"

Sell now. Do what you have to do for transpo until Mav arrives.

I don't think the market is going back down between now and when you'll likely get your Hybrid. If anything I wouldn't be surprised if it continues to go up. It seems as though all clues point to the new inventory shortage not ending anytime soon. As long as that is the case, used market is going to remain high, and more than likely going to get worse for buyers. Think of all the people that sold in the first wave of price increases early to mid summer. Now who is left to sell their car to take advantage? Not many - that means the second wave we are starting to see in terms of used car sales price increases will not be ending soon.

In my case I was in the same boat - ordered in June, offers were around $35k for my 2019 ranger. I watched them slowly decrease to around $32-33K late August and thought I will hold out, I think it is going to turn back soon. Sold my Ranger first week of October to Carmax for $37,400. I've also tracked my wife's 2018 fiat 500 value - most of the summer it has fluctuated between $14-16K (paid $11k just over a year ago for it). This week have an offer from Carvana for $19,600. This won't be ending anytime soon!

Since you don't gamble you are in a tough place. Gas prices appear to be increasing for awhile so gas guzzler prices should tend down whereas higher mpg vehicles should tend upwards. So gas guzzler = dump asap can more easily justify keeping econo mpg but that is a lower risk bet but still a bet. Non gambler=dump asap when you like $$$ not when you think $$$ is maxed! Do not expect to find cheap replacement but if one shows up, jump on it but introduces gamble that something needs fixing. You did say you had motorcycle so could drive that. However driving it daily introduces possibility that you will become less attentive and have accident. Is there someone you could car pool with, maybe helping them with their gas? In short everything, including life is a gamble and the best answer is to do what you "feel" is best not what "think" is best. I most likely would choose to drive the current car until I "felt" like I would be an idiot not to sell it. Sometimes I find myself in "I was an idiot for not doing something when I really should have moment". But that is life.

It's definitely one of those moments that you have to gauge what the impact is. I saved a quote for 2018 Mazda 6 from Carvana back in mid October. Kept checking offers during this time and would save any offers that were better. Well I found out my remote/in-person schedule was pushed out till the end of the year. Saw prices were going down and talked with the wife about going to one car. She said we should be good considering the remote work and holidays coming. Good thing I saved that quote from Carvana and it was not expired yet. Went through the motions and got the car sold last week. Now I have a better down payment for my Hybrid Maverick, whenever that is delivered. But in hindsight every one's situation is different and if there's an offer that you can't refuse take it if it makes sense.

I wouldn't sale anything until you receive confirmation that you Maverick is at your Dealership.

My Maverick was delivered 11/1 (estimated delivery 11/3-9) to a Ford Trucking shipping distribution lot and is sitting 1-1/2 hours from my dealership and Ford has put a "Shipping Hold" on the delivery. Just received a email from Ford Saturday that now the "Estimated" delivery is scheduled for 12/9-15.

I wouldn't be too upset, except knowing the vehicle was so close, I got brave and secured Bank Pre-Approval. Now my bank loan deadline is 12-24, SO if the vehicle DON'T get delivered by 12/24, then I'll have to re-do the bank loan all over again and my credit rating will drop big time.

My suggestion is - DON'T do anything until you know of sure that you will even be getting a Maverick at all!!!
