This is interesting to hear. Was your friend having issues with bogging down? I ask because there are other variables that could also impact offroad performance. Driver experience and tread pattern come to mind. Tremor gearing should help offset the bigger tire but I'm not sure how much impact that would have.
This is a very subjective topic as I only know one individual that uses Maverick Tremor off road and it's all sand so it's hard to get a good comparison with out more input from other drivers. I have been driving on the beach to fish since I purchased my Tremor. Most individuals just drive there Maverick's for every day driving. Driving habits could make a a big difference on how your vehicle performs. Up until today (heavy rain) the season has been dry and sand are hard on your vehicle. One day while we were driving to our spot I was leading and he was trailing far behind. It was a straight shot down the shore of the beach the sand was extremely soft he's not one to lag behind not sure how he had his modes configured but I was at least at 20 mph or 25 which is very fast for soft sand that's why I had said I thought I outperformed his vehicle however I never did ask him but I suspected that he was bogging down or he keep it in sand mode. I never keep my vehicle in sand mold unless it's soft sand and hilly and tough terrain or a speed limit.. I use the manual controls on my console. In sand mode the transmission will hold gears longer with higher revs and it's usually Just shifts to 1st and 2nd It would take me a long time revving at 2K plus to get to my destination . So on a straight run I will keep the Tremor in Normal mode and hit the 4 wheel lock button and if needed the differential lock. In normal mode the transmission will upshift faster that's why I did not go with the taller tire. It sounds complicated but if you drive on the sand and have experience you will understand exactly what I'm saying and doing. The photo is what I describe as a long run we go far into the distance of that photo so if you were in sand mode it would take you forever to get there. Conditions that day were mediocre and the sand was damp and had very little stress on the drive train.

Personally I’would not use the 65’s. I don’t understand the concept of the low profile tires on vehicles that have the possibility driving down a two track of dirt road. The rims are more susceptible to damage due to the condition of the road
It isn't really "low profile", especially being a 245/65-17. That tire is about 1" taller than the stock tires.

I know I am late to the party, but I went with 245/70"s in a Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT. I haven't really been able to test them yet but I absolutely love them.

I’ve got a 245/70 AT3W on stock hybrid suspension and it rubs the liner in the back at the pinch weld, I think you’d be fine.
Can confirm, I have 245/70 Vredestein's on mine, and they only rub the liner at full lock on the the pinch weld at the back of the wheel well. Worth it for the bigger tires

Any rubbing with that size tire? With no lift.
The wisdom of maverick truck club says 245/70r17 (30.6” diameter) will rub.

MTC wisdom also says the largest tire you can fit without rubbing is a 255/65r17 (30.1” diameter). I bought this size based on MTC comments and I can verify that it does not rub without a lift kit.

Other sizes? Well, the 235/70r17 would fit (30.0” diameter), but there’s only a few companies that make that size and popular options like BFG AT, Nitto grapplers and Falken wild peaks are not available.

With exception to the tremor. Will be getting Toyo AT3s in that size for my truck soon enough.

I'd say with any decent accumulation of ice/snow in the wheelwell, you're going to tear something up. Why buy a tire that really does not fit? Maybe in TX the ice isn't a concern. But it probably is for most of us.

Thanks much for this information. I'll be looking for either 255/65R17 or 245/65R17. Like as much height as possible without a lift and zero rubbing.

It literally barely even rubs, not even to the point of scuffing through the felt. And I'm here in AZ, so zero chance of ice/snow build up ...

The problem is that if you get minor rubbing in the environment that you tested it, it will probably be much worse out in the wild, like when doing a 3 point Y turn on a rutted out fire trail, or when you have 4 people in the truck. That is why most people like to go with the largest size that is reported as “having no rubbing”. That way, when their suspension is bound up and it does inevitably rub, that it is minor.

I have 245/70s on my Tremor. I bought Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT's in this size. I went with a rugged terrain in this size about 3 months ago before I moved to North Dakota. They don't rub or if they do it isn't perceivable and I have yet to be in a situation they couldn't handle. I off road my Tremor quite frequently. I hope this helps
