It's due to the way the park brake interconnects with the calipers. Service mode retracts the piston back into the caliper, placing the park brake into service mode for pad replacement. - It's nearly the same on all models with an electric or electronic park/emergency brake.

And I might add, this makes it much easier to change the rear brakes than on a Prius Hybrid. On the Prius, you have to disconnect the battery or not operate anything electronical on the Prius so that the piston doesn't move while you're changing the pads. If you don't do this, the piston will push the pads out (It positions the pads whenever you turn on the car) and if there is no rotor in place, the piston pops out!

And then you have to try and put the piston back in.............but it will only align back into it's seat in the exact position!

So this feature with the Maverick actually is a blessing.

So is this an indication on the dash telling you it's time to service your brakes?

Hi Gpp - I understand your consternation. Vehicles are much more complex today. For me, it unscores the importance of finding a "good" Ford dealer. I just don't think the brake guy or the corner mechanic that I have known and trusted for 30+ years can be knowlegeable on all vehicle makes.

The problem is finding that "good" Ford dealer.

67 year old fart here and could not agree more. I cannot stand this dial shifter...And I already know if I tried to change it to the regular shifter from the escape, I believe, I'd end up breaking all the plastic stuff like they console shroud...

Brake service mode is not a reminder to service the brakes. It is a procedure you need to follow when changing the REAR brake pads. The procedure allows you to retract the brake caliper piston AND prevents the electronic parking brake from engaging while performing the brake service.

People keep bitching about the dial shifter. Another old fart here (75), but I like it. 2nd vehicle with (other 2020 Escape Titanium). Saves so much space on the console. I only wish it would default to the last setting used when you shut the car off. I use ECO mode much of the time, on the Escape had to hit the button twice to get into Eco, now on my Mav, have to hit it 4 times then hit the OK button on the steering wheel to get rid of the damn seat belt reminder. Grrrrrrrrrrr. No seat reminder on my Escape.

I happened to ask my local mechanic about this, last time I took the truck in for an oil change. He was very aware of the procedure for doing rear brakes on Fords that had an e-parking brake. He also said I probably wouldn't need a brake job on my Hybrid for at least 100,000 miles, since most of my braking is done regeneratively.

I don't think there are any Ford authorized service centers in my area that can be trusted to not rip off customers.

Taking apart the brakes every 3-5 years and re-lubing the caliper slide pins etc is a good idea. Also flushing the fluid every 3-5 years as well.

Unless you do a lot of towing or drive aggressively, you probably won't have to replace the brakes at all. My wife's Prius had 140k on it and still had original pads/rotors which were only halfway down from factory new (rotors were actually new factory spec).

This 68 year old fart is happy to adapt. I find the dial to be easy and convenient to use. I just had to find somewhere else to hang my trash bag.
