This is a package that I ordered. One of the items included in this order states "power locking tailgate". I haven't been able to find anything to explain this

Power locking tailgate means it is controlled by the FOB and door lock buttons. You don't need to use a key to lock/unlock.

Tailgate locks when you lock your doors. You don't need a separate key or FOB. To unlock, just unlock your doors.

With a locking tailgate and a shell topper, hard trifold or a rolling tonneau cover, the truck bed is pretty secure and you can put things in there that would otherwise need to be in the cab to be secured. The locked tailgate also prevents access to the tonneau cover releases. With a soft top you can just knife it to get into the bed.

Yep, So right you are.
I had it happen to me with my old Ranger. Someone sliced it right open and the tailgate did not lock.
After that,
I said, Never again would I own a soft tonneau.

The tailgate locks when you lock the doors.

I wish the locking tailgate was separate option that wasn't automatically included as a part of any package, like the 300A. Unless you plan to get a hard cover it's a worthless feature, at best, and an aggravation (at least for me) to have to get out the keys every time I want to open the tailgate if the truck happens to be locked.

Just disconnect the electric locking mechanism, then?

One thing to keep in mind with hard tonneau covers with the pull cord style release is that it's VERY easy to pop many of them with a coat hanger shoved through the gap between cover and tailgate.
IMHO, people with that type of latch should consider tonneau covers more of a concealment device than a secure cover.

I am glad it is included. Tailgates are designed to be easily removed. It is also nice to lock your tailgate even without a cover to keep it from being stolen.
At least Ford saw the issue with this and installed a form of retention. It's not super secure but it does need the correct torx bit to remove so it might stop a casual thief from an easy opportunity.

Can’t tell you how many tailgates are stolen from a truck parked overnight in the driveway of a home or in parking lots of big box stores. People fail to lock it and they take them on 3 minutes.

I never thought of a tailgate being stolen a thing. Until about 35 years ago when mine was stolen off my Nissan pickup. I like the locking tailgate and would like it even if I didn't have the hard tonneau I've got on my Maverick.

All trucks should come standard with a power locking tailgate... Don't like it disable it. Most people want it.
