I’ve seen a handful of questions pop up about the window tinting from factory.

I measured my windows today which is a ‘23 Lariat. The trim level shouldn’t be affecting anything. There is approximately a 1-2% discrepancy value when using the devices. The percentage is the amount of visible light transmission (VLT) that the windows are allowing though. Higher the number, the more light (less tint) is on/within the window

Windshield - 78%
Right Front - 77%
Left Front - 76%
Right Rear - 26%
Left Rear - 23%
Rear Fixed/Center Slider - 26%

Hopefully this helps you people out.

Thanks, I’m going to get mine done soon and want to get the back three done darker and keep the front legal. Not like limo tint but maybe twice as dark as it is.

Thanks. I thought the rears were supposed to be 35%, and that’s what I told my tint guy. Your measurement definitively explains why my 35% front window tint looks a bit lighter than the rear window factory tint.

Just had my fronts done in 20% film and they do appear slightly darker than the rear now (ever so slightly) so this hits.

I also had a 70% film applied to the windshield and it surprises me to see the percentage from the factory but then again I can tell the difference between 20% and 26% so I guess that also jives.

Good empirical data, thank you.

I just had my front door windows tinted to match the rears as close as possible, I believe they used 30% which is just barely lighter, overall it’s a good match.

I wonder if the Lariat’s windshield differers from the others.

I do think it has an extra acoustical layer for sound deadening so that might cause some tinting as well?

You’re welcome. I kinda wonder too since it’s supposed to have that acoustic windshield or something. I would be surprised if the tint between levels differed though.

I read a post stating that the rear windows were 25%, which seems to correlate with your measurements.

If the factory rear window tints are 25% im technically breaking the law, here in Indiana legal tint for ANY of the side windows is 30%

If it’s from the FACTORY (not dealership add on)it should be exempt from any state statutes for sunscreening/tint.
Where I’m at, passenger cars cannot have darker than 70%. Multipurpose vehicles (trucks/SUV/etc) forward of the driver seat cannot be darker than 70%. All rearward windows could be 0%.

In Minnesota we can have up to 50% tint level on the front windows. Based on these numbers would applying a 75% tint on the front windows get me right at that 50% tint level? Or am I not thinking this through correctly?

If anyone's interested, here's some data on various 3M ceramic films.

I think you would need to use tint darker than your current %. I could be wrong as I’m not a tint installer.

I had mine tinted with Ceramic Pro IR 45% a week ago. Of course, I went in and said "color match as best as you can, within legal limits, which I think is 35%". She said, yes, it's 35%, but all recent automotive glass has an inherent loss (this is where she took me to the black labeling on each piece of glass) and showed me the "at least 70% transmission" printed on it. NC is an inspection state and she said that her customers have had issues with passing inspection with 35% because it compounds with the inherent loss, causing it to fail actual measurements. They worked with the Ceramic Pro manufacturer who ended up creating a 45% tint that compounded within legal limits but close to 35% final transmission.

Personally, I think her story checks out OK.

Edit: She said to check out old school auto glass on classic cars, before all the safety crap came into play. It should be clear as ice and obviously different next to modern auto glass.

My factory rears measured 23%.
I had the fronts tinted the same percentage with a reasonably good film grade, one of the top brands, don’t remember which one, that is supposed to cut infrared by 65% or so.

I have decided that having the same tint front and rear looks better than just the rear half. The front tint matches the rears very closely.

During the day the tint doesn’t bother me at all, and I don’t notice it at night which was a concern.

The infrared blocking has been extremely effective, a huge difference in comfort and protection from the suns harsh rays.
