Can you put it in gear? If not.... then yeah, your in accessory mode.

And, be sure to not only touch the brake, but push it down atleast a half inch or better before trying to start it. Would rather have a shifter than the stupid dial thingy.

MY24 XLT with key start will. HB goes to run and ICE engages if needed. But need to press brake pedal to put into gear. Auto-hold is also engaged.
I don’t think the ICE would be running in acc mode.

What trim? 2023 XL and XLT require you to physically insert and turn the key. No need to put your foot on the brake pedal to start it, just flick the key to Start, let it return to Run, and the vehicle is running.

2023 Lariat has push-button start, requiring you to depress the brake pedal to start it. As noted above, pressing the start button with no foot on brake is equivalent to turning a key to Accessory, not Run.

Thanks. I have an XL and that is what it does. It makes sense that it will because of key turn instead of button press.

Do you get a "Ready" light with just the key turned? I thought Federal requirements now stipulated that the brake pedal has to be depressed in order to start.

Yes but it's an XL with key start. And TBH it's kinda nice sometimes.

When I picked up the vehicle from the dealer they wanted to go over features with me so the salesman reached inside the cab and simply twisted the key before I got inside. I had owned a push button start Buick for 6 years before this truck and I kinda chuckled about it. (Oh yeah, keys don't have to push the brake pedal)

Regardless of the start condition you have to put your foot on the brake to shift out of park.

With my '26 hybrid if I press the start button to go into accessory mode it pops up a message that says "Press brake to start" on the cluster.

Absolutely correct & normal.
Hybrid Maverick using a key to start. Will start and the ready light will come on without having your foot on the brake.
Here's a video that shows me starting my 2023 hybrid XLT with a key, from the passenger side. Definitely no foot on the brake and the ready light appearing.

Exactly. People think the vehicle in on. Now try to put it in Drive.
Considering the key can turn all the way to On, and then beyond to Start - it is NOT just Accessory mode.
You are sitting in Ready after that. All with no brake press.
Putting it in Drive has nothing to do with that.

This is clearly very different behavior than prior vehicles with ignition tied to brakes.
And separate than brakes also tied to transmission shift - which is what you are talking about.
(and you can still hear that interlock perhaps)

Perhaps later vehicles have starting doing away with the brake/ignition interlock switch, my prior vehicle was 2005 Toyota Rav4 - so I missed some advancements.

And driving others newer vehicles - I'm in the habit of brake then turn key anyway - so I'd never have noticed if it started changing.

For as long as I can recall that has been the case - late 80's.
Way before now.
I was surprised first time my habit of pressing the brake was NOT done but still allowed complete start and ready and ICE running in winter.

Perhaps the requirement has actually been dropped now. Or in certain cases. Or Ford made a mistake.

Hmmm - which is more likely?

I am thinking that the gear shift interlock probably took away the requirement for a foot on the brake when starting the vehicle.

Out of habit, I always put my foot on the brake.
That is why, I sat on the passenger side when I made the video to highlight the fact that the brake was untouched.
Unless somebody, can show otherwise. I don't feel that putting your foot on the brake pedal when starting a vehicle is necessarily a bad habit that needs to be broke.
