Yes the hybrid is pressurized and instructions say to not top off to prevent possible hazards (does not say if hazard is to person or vehicle). A button is pushed to depressurize the tank and unlatch the fuel door and if that doesn't open doors then there is a manual cable to pull to Do it.
Didn't they have one of those systems on the Hindenburg?

Dang if I know. But I am one of the type that if it's says not to top off I will not. I had a friend who topped his off in I do not remember what vehicle, who flooded a canister in the tank which resulted in it's failure which was somewhat expensive. Seems like there was a warning that the pressure system needed space to properly work. I guessed that there would be possibility for fuel to be expelled under some conditions or???

The Toyota Prius hybrid has a rubber bladder in the fuel tank. It helps control emissions and is part of what lets them qualify as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV). Unfortunately it also holds less gas in the winter than in the summer because the bladder stiffens up.
I must be part Prius, since my bladder holds less in the Winter (or just getting old). Unfortunately for anyone near me, my bladder doesn’t help control my emissions

Same externally. The Hybrid is a pressurized tank, and that eats interior volume. They are the same size, just hold different amounts of fuel.

Thanks for the info, I never heard about the pressure release function, NOW it makes sense.

Just a few question on hybrid. Can you run your tank down to empty on gauge and still have at least a gallon or two? The one who showed the picture of pump at 16 plus gallons was it below Empty on gauge when that happened and or did you top off tank. (bad practice on any car by the way).

Someone posted that he recorded milage when remaining range showed 0 and the. The miles until totally ran out. Seems like 50-70 more miles do not remember but was quite far. Some doing it and then super max top off probably trying to get 800 or 900 miles per tank.

Yes.
It is safe and seems reliable to run down to 0 miles remaining on the computer calculated display. There is a couple gallons past this mark.

To pump 16+ you have to run past this mark. This imaginary "empty" mark is after the computer computes you used 13.8 gallons.

The 2 to 2.7 gallon "buffer" is there to prevent you from running out if the computer were off a little, and we all know it is.

My suspicion of that 2.7 gallon difference between Hybrid and EB is all about the pressurized fuel system in the Hybrid. In order to pressurize the fuel system probably needs some amount of air headspace. If you've ever played with water rockets, you should only fill them up about 2/3 with water to allow an airspace to pressurize.

We're talking two different things.
The EcoBoosts hold 18+ gallons if you run them dry.
So if the hybrids have more equipment inside taking up volume, they hold 16.5 gallons WITH all the added equipment in there, plus, I'll assume, at least some vapor space in addition to that.

But yes, the purpose of some of the volume beyond 13.8 may be there for reasons other than reserve fuel.

A $10 fill-up sounds pretty nice to me, maybe automakers should make ~2 gallon tanks?
Sure, why not. They already want you to buy EV's so they can jack up electricity prices...

inb4 CA bans fuel tanks over 2 gallons.

ā€˜Round Numbers Guy’ checking in…

Yeah, I know there’s a 13.8 number floating around, which I’ve rounded up to 14, which also is factored to be ā€˜not really the full capacity’, which translates to ā€˜empty isn’t empty’.

SOP is to start thinking about filling up (to 1st shut off, no more) at @ 100 MTE…unless I’m in NW Indiana, which currently has gas at a $.50+ per gallon discount than Chicagoland.

550 MTE yesterday at fill up, about the same as the last 3 fill ups. Driving and enjoying the truck, without obsessing about mpg’s, knowing it’s gentle on gas (however that’s defined).

Round Numbers Guy out…

I used to fill up my 1999 Saturn SL2 for under $10 on a regular basis. The gas station outside Danville, VA where I stopped regularly on my trips between Chapel Hill, NC and Charlottesville, VA was $0.69/gallon for a while in 1999. The car had something like a 12 gallon tank and got 40 MPG on the highway. I generally filled it from about 1/4 tank for $6 or $7. That is the cheapest I ever remember gas being.

I started driving in 1989. I remember being really offended when gas "spiked" to $1.29/gallon during the first Gulf War. Previously it had been right at $1/gallon. I once took a trip from Charlottesville, VA to Fort Walton Beach, FL in that Saturn. The first time I had to stop was just after I crossed the Georgia/South Carolina line. I was at about 1/8th of a tank and needed a bathroom.

That Saturn wasn't the most refined car, but it got fantastic mileage, better than a lot of efficient cars today. Of course Honda had the CRX HF in the late 80's that would get 50 MPG, but it had a lot of drawbacks.

Let's look at part numbers and prices of the part.

The Ecoboost Fuel Tank, Part# NZ6Z-9002-A, costs $356.37.

The Hybrid Fuel Tank, Part# NZ6Z-9002-B, $935.41.

I think this settles it that the two fuel tanks are different.
