Why don't OEMs offer dashcam options?

I see so many threads about dashcams, and dashcam installs gone wrong. Makes me wonder why the heck OEMs don't offer dashcams as an option. I mean, it's another way to make money, right?

Pretty sure ford does via their dealer installed option, see ford accessories web site. Probably not profitable as factory install/assembly line process

I think it won't be long until they are factory options. I have been wanting one, but haven't been able to decided the best option for me yet.

I think its because they are problematic to design and integrate seamlessly.
If/when something goes wrong, the factory warranty will have to cover it and it's likely not worth the effort just yet.

Tesla does it, but they focus heavily on data collection for self-driving, so having the built in dash cam is a byproduct of that.

Factory installed option is a good middle-ground for now because its still a standalone unit that is not integrated, and is simpler to support.

Our Mavericks already have 2 mounted cameras, forward and back.
Why couldn't they also record as dash cams?
I wonder how hard it would be to integrate it into a stored video system.
I would even accept one that took an SD card.

Seems simple to me.

I’ve installed a Wolfbox dash (and rear) cam. Easy install, replaces the rear view mirror, around $100 on Amazon.

Why not just some RJ11 power outlets near the mirror?

For all the marketing hot air about being "hackable", I never see anything substantive. There should be a switched accessory power connector in the dash just like the one in the bed. I would be ecstatic if Ford would provide a switched power point up by the mirror and a cable conduit over the headliner (for a rear-facing camera), and would cheerfully pay $100 for this $2 feature. A few 1/4-20 threaded sockets here and there (for a RAM Mount ball) would be heavenly, but now I'm REALLY dreaming.

Aftermarket tends to offer a variety of better options at a lower cost.
Ford Accessories site seems to offer Thinkware products.
Most are 1080p ... the 4k offering is $699.

You mean like an "upfitter" option .. like switches and wiring they offer in other Ford Trucks/Vans?
Makes sense to me.

Honestly just a simple racetrack from front windshied through headliner to rear window would have been nice ... could use whatever wire with whatever ends you want.
