Your second sentence had me scratching my bald head wondering, where did he learn to drive a stick shift transmission? The idea my dad infused into my brother and me was to use the engine as the brake and save the brakes for the hard stop. If you are covering the brake or actually using it at the same time as the downshift you indeed are signaling the driver behind you that your speed is getting less and they need to do the same.

That is not the way some of us drive and I know it causes drivers behind me to get uncomfortably close to my bumper when I use the engine as the brake as I come up on a turn. Now mind you I am signalling at that turn so I am not sure why they insist on riding my bumper. Most drivers don't leave a good amount of the following distance these days.

So maybe you could put one of those old-time mercury switches in line with your brake switch. When you are slowing down at a decent rate it will be shining the brakes at the driver behind. If you are slowing down in moving traffic it might do the same.

I think all the rear-end collisions these days are a factor of many things. Distracted driving is #1.
But the lack of proper following distance and a need for speed regardless if traffic allows it or not seem to be the other factors I can think of right now.
No one should be close to your bumper, ever…

based on the pictures of salvage yard, I am going to say all accidents happen... A lot of people that post on this forum love their mavericks as their baby, and are careful drivers because they don't want to get in an accident that is their fault.... but look at this site.. https://erepairables.com/salvage-cars-auction/ford/maverick

I was commuting before during and after Covid. Drivers Today are much more aggressive and much less courteous. Translated, Jackasses.

look at this site..
Interesting to note that the repaired salvaged vehicles have asking prices within several thousand of original MSRP.

... Most of the accident posts here are about getting rear ended...
Most accidents are rear-end collisions. Number one reason for them is distracted driving.

There are way too many electronic gadgets, accessories & screens in vehicles now.

Just too many distracted drivers nowadays. As someone who used to motorcycle I'm used to always checking my mirrors, especially when I'm pulling up to a stop light.

On the note of the brake lights and regen, maybe Ford could implement a strobe or flashing light of some sort to show that you're regen braking? F1 cars do this, they flash their rain light at the end of a straight if they're regening to show the driver behind that they'll be slowing down sooner than expected.

My '22 Maverick was rear ended in December. Heavy traffic, snow and ice. The Maverick stopped well short of the van in front but the SUV behind me slid for over 100 feet before it hit me. I think the Maverick has better brake sensors than other vehicles. But let's not rule out distracted drivers.

I was rear ended in a 3 car crash. Pick up truck following too close in rush hour traffic rear ended a small car, they rear ended me. Luckily minimal damage so it could be repaired.

It seems like a very high percentage of Mavericks are getting rear ended. Most of the accident posts here are about getting rear ended. I read an article recently about a huge salvage company somewhere in the Midwest that is buying up all the totaled Mavs and the majority have rear end damage. Certainly Idiots on cell phones and texting are a contributing factor but you would expect the rate to be the same as all vehicles. Idiots don t discriminate. So that can’t be the only reason
One thing I suspect with Hybrids is one pedal driving. Ford did not put a simple $25 part in the hybrids that would engage the brake lights when the vehicle is regen braking like most other hybrids and EV’s do. Maybe the NHTSA will pick up on this and order a recall.
Couple of questions for the group.
Of those that have been rear ended did to you replace the stock brake bulbs with brighter led’s like Lasfits?
If you are running the replacement LED’s do you think they make a difference?
Basicly, does anyone have any good ideas to prevent this?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Maybe they are just trying to get close enough to read the tailgate to see what kind of truck it is

I agree. It would be kind of like the brake light coming on while downshifting a manual tranny. Not a good idea at all.
When downshifting to slow down you are supposed to lightly touch the brake with right foot. Was drilled into me in driving school for 18wheelers.

I was rear ended about 3 weeks ago. Guy said he wasn't paying attention. I had just got my Maverick in March. I didn't want to get out and look, but Luckly it wasn't quite as bad as it felt. New bumper, taillight, and some work on the tailgate. Problem is, I can't get anyone to work on it until the end of August. I hate driving around my wrecked Maverick. Hadn't washed it since the accident until last night. Made me feel better after I washed it.

The purpose of brake lights is to get the attention of the driver behind you when you decelerate. If they had been correctly named decelerating lights, engineers probable would have added an accelerometer to the brake decelerating light system decades ago.

This is what the back of my Jeep looked like when I was rear-ended while stopped waiting to make a left turn. It wasn't about someone trying to figure out what vehicle it was or it looking like something they thought was bigger. It wasn't because the brake lights weren't bright enough or there weren't enough of them. The left turn signal was on as well, meaning the left turn signal was sequencing amber and the left side of the tailgate light bar was flashing amber.

There are vehicles of all sizes and shapes and drivers are expected to have situational and spatial awareness. It's inattention or following too closely when the driver ahead does something unexpected, plain and simple.

I don't think the Maverick is any more or less vulnerable than any other make or model.
