Seems like they both must run at the same time--even if just when starting up/slowing down.
Do they normally run at the same time? Wehn the EV meter says 'Hybrid' I am assuming they both are running?
Seems simple to answer but not so, at least for me.
Thanks for any help.

Hybrid means both Traction Motor and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) are being used for propulsion.

Blue color is used for EV only.
Grey color is used for Hybrid.
There is no ICE only color, though when parked and the ICE is running, the TM isn't being used.
And there are plenty of times with ICE going there is no TM propelling, and other times there is.

Slowing down is exactly when the ICE doesn't run, unless it's cold or High Voltage Battery (HVB) is low.
Some starting up/moving the ICE may not run.

Turn your radio off - you can hear the ICE.

Watch this, and use the forum search feature - it's been out for more than a year, a lot written that can help.

I like the vehicle no matter what. Lots of asinine questions though.

so explain blue and grey at the same time when your foot is in it to pass or get on the on ramp?

There is also an engine icon that turns from very light gray (engine off) to slightly brighter light gray (engine on) that indicates that the ICE is actively running. No I'm not joking, it is ludicrously subtle.

Asking questions is how we figure stuff out. Also we read the manual, but it isn't too helpful for this one.

Sure, there isn't a "gas engine only" display because the gas engine is never running alone as a conventional ICE (internal combustion engine) driving a geartrain in a transmission. It only runs when battery power is insufficient to move the vehicle and it does not move the vehicle directly through gearing, instead it works as a (big) electric generator in tandem with the battery until the battery is depleted (then you are running on the electricity generated solely by the motor). There are many videos about how the eCVT in our Mavericks work, it's neat stuff!

The "power gauge" in the instrument cluster has a little engine icon. It is, in my opinion, a rather poorly designed indicator. That is not actually my true opinion but I am being as polite as I can be so as to at least try and appear to be a well-mannered person.

If I could, I would rub the collective noses of whatever committee that designed and approved this indicator in it while repeatedly saying "no!, bad design, bad".

Image 1 below has a red arrow pointing towards it's location. It looks like a check engine light. It's not. The check engine light illuminates yellow (you will see it on the right side when the vehicle does it's power on self test, e.g., image 2).

The power gauge ICE activity indicator is, however, the exact same shape glyph as the check engine light. This is Bad Interface Design Point Number One.

- If the ICE is *not* running, it icon outline is grey in color (image 3, top).
- If the ICE *is* running, the outline is white in color (image 3, bottom).

If you are a normal human being and do silly things like, say, wear sunglasses or drive in daylight or when the sun is down and the moon is out (or not out) it's dang near impossible to tell if the icon is outlined in grey or white without actually staring at it for more than a few tenths of a second which is Bad Interface Design Point Number Two because it takes your focus off of the road.

Of course using the EV Coach mode display lets you know when you are in electric or hybrid mode, but - what if you don't want to use that?

I'll yield the soapbox to the next member, thanks for reading.

Thanks for the photos.
2022 to 2024 have different screens.

To the original post:

These trucks can be electric only 10% to 50% of the time depending on your speed and conditions.

These trucks are "gas only" in very rare, unusual circumstances, less than 1% of the time. So why bother with a special display for that. So they didn't.

The majority of the time it is truly a hybrid. Gas and electricity working in concert. Which is 90% of the time for most drivers.

Assume you have a '25 or '26.
I don't so a photo would help.

In '22 to '24 that generally means you were in EV and are transitioning to hybrid and there is some latency in the display getting updated. It lasts 1 to 3 seconds. It's a type of serial bus so more important data gets priority.

Are you seeing that for a prolonged period?

Again, photos would help this 22 owner to help you decipher.

The only stupid/asinine question is the one you don’t ask.

Mavbrids are different, ask away.

It's not really important when one is running or the other, but rather making the most efficient use of both and using the ICE during its most efficient duty cycles. The Atkinson engine wouldn't jump off the line but it's great fuel economy highway cruising, That's why you need a boost. Creeping, Stopping and going in traffic is inefficient with and ICE, So for a period of time you're stopping and going without the ice. And then using it to charge and in an efficient RPM. That's what all the programming is about.

So when it is showing Hybrid at about 40, I back off on the pedal, it switches to Charge, then I tap the pedal lightly and it goes to Electric until I step on it more then it goes to hybrid and the Gas engine starts and I don't feel a thing--and no radio is on? There is more to it--when a gas engine starts a noise, a sudden movement or something has to be felt or heard or they have done some really great work and after all, it is a Ford...
I cannot understand the constant switching back and forth on a hilly road and not hearing or feeling the repeating gas to electric.

I would like to know how the whole thing works--even the idea that a gas motor can start and then immediately be at road speed without being noticed is just , well, pretty good!

The constant starting/stopping has to take its toll on parts....

If they are both running at the same time, that is also a great accomplishment as they must share the same 'connection' to the wheels and in some cases all 4 of them.

Again, great stuff....and here I am getting between 40and 45 MPG using it!

Apparently this is your first hybrid?

They've been around since the late 90s and Ford's setup is almost identical to Toyota.

here's a video to help you understand how and why it works, and also why is incredible reliable

My interpretation going from image top to bottom:

All electric power to the wheels.
If engine is on by happenstance, it is at idle just to warm up or something.

A little electric help, mostly gas power.

Almost no electric help, almost all gas power.

Regenerating. Coasting or braking.

Light duty about 40% of that light duty is electric power, 60% from gasoline.
