New to owning a Hybrid and still learning so this may be a stupid question to some of you. I notice that sometimes when decelerating and coming to a stop, that it remains in gas mode, like it wants to keep going. even stays in gas mode while I'm stopped, like at a traffic light. Most times when I let off the gas and coast to a light, it switches to electric. Why would it not? Should I even be questioning this? Just let it do it's thing, it knows what to do? Thanks for the responses in advance. :)

How cold is it?
May be staying on to warm up, or re-warm up as your driving could have cooled the engine down enough.

If the HVB is below 40% SOC, the engine will remain running until charged back over the 40%, and your braking regen may not have helped enough if really close to 30% minimum.

In other words - you can't always effect this.

Well, the latter one you might somewhat, if this happens frequently in certain spots.

Always annoying to have run the battery down in EV mode on some flat or incline, and indeed hit that spot where now the ICE is going to run while sitting. Then it turns off right before needing to accelerate, when it turns back on!
So if this happens in spots, you can sometimes tweak driving to land in EV mode because it didn't reach 30%. But then it'll turn on when going again.

Like if you feathered it from last stop to stay in EV (don't annoy other drivers doing that!), but caused ICE to run at the next stop, not great.
If you slowed on an incline to keep it in EV near the limit discharging the battery, just to get to next stop and ICE runs, not great.

Sometimes it's better to just get the ICE on and get up to speed, get up that hill, ect - and use EV mode after that.
If you do regular routes - you might start to notice that ability to change things slightly.

Appreciate the detailed response. Lately. This is no AC. No heat windows down. Comfortable spring weather. But I get what you're saying. Again I appreciate it. I know it's nothing to be alarmed about, but it's still relatively new to me 🙂

In that case the 1st question and 2nd sentence don't apply.

Every thing else does apply.

The short answer is, very normal.

Long answer is, too many reasons why to fit on 5 sheets of paper.

You will learn how to predict, and even control this to some degree in due time if it interests you.

If for some reason you’re using the battery a lot, perhaps it doesn’t currently have enough of a charge. Another possibility is if you are using the heater.

I find that you need to put your car in Eco mode. I run my truck with speed control, engaged, just hit the down mode to slow down and release an adult push it into electric mode.
