If you're interested in window tint, the answer's usually the same for the front two. Either as dark as your state allows, dark enough to match the stock tint on the second row, or a safe 35% VLT that'll fly in most states.

I wanted ideas on what to do for all the other glass?
  • Anyone putting "clear" (or as close to it as possible) ceramic on the back glass / second row / moonroof to help with heat, even if there's already smoked glass from the factory? Or is the stock glass good enough to help with the heat, not just the darkness of the window?
  • What VLT is everyone doing for their moonroof, if any at all? Too dark and there's no point to it being glass. But it's also the main way heat/light would get in when open.
  • Eyebrows...is that still a thing? I'm thinking of adding one to help with the afternoon sun, but not sure the % to request there. My last truck (circa 1996-2005 or so) had 5% limo tint, and you could barely see the traffic lights. Probably would need something lighter than that above the AS-1 line, but didn't know what was "typical" here.
My guess would be to keep everything as uniform as possible - match what's stock from the factory, aside from the fronts that have to be a little lighter for legal reasons. Wanted to check the forums for some pros and cons before I set things up with my window guy.

If you look at the "similar threads" below, you'll see there are already a ton of opinions and previous experiences out there, and that is just scratching the surface.

10 years ago I would have done a factory match. However, since street lighting has been changing, and there are many different types of headlights in use, I have personally experienced that some "light" tints in daylight, are almost blackout with certain streetlamp types. When we had sodium vapor everywhere and mostly filament bulb headlights it wasn't a problem, tint suppliers were obviously on the ball there. But since there's a wide spectrum, literally, of lighting now, one tint doesn't seem to do all lighting conditions well.

So while I might be able to confirm that a tint does well at night locally, last thing I want in a strange city at night is not being able to see well.

After every combination possible, I now just get:

Front sides/entire windshield/moonroof: 70% ceramic (basically clear unless you're at an angle).
Rear sides/rear window: 5% standard

Won't work for everyone, but it works for me. I had matched side windows before, but it was a pain in the rear to back up trailers at night. Had windshield strips before and it was rarely helpful; would rather just wear sunglasses. Tinting the entire windshield and front sides with 70% ceramic lets me still see around without getting roasted or having the car turn into an oven when parked outside.

70% "clear" ceramic film on the windshield, 20% ceramic film on the front windows to mostly match the rear.

While my kids would prefer clear ceramic film on the rear windows - I opted for reflectix (when parked) which gives full IR reflection, privacy, and is a fraction of the cost.

Current thread that would have ended up in your 1st or 2nd page of threads.

I see, though these are about the front two untinted windows. Lots of opinions there. For me, I'll be going with 35% for mine.

I instead wanted to ask those with experience if the factory tint on the rears was enough to help with the heat, or if clear ceramic made sense. Or even if "clear tint" was a thing...I see where 70% VLT is considered so light most dont think of it as "tint", but assume it's enough to violate a "no tint below the AS-1 line" rule. Also, if I want the front and rear side windows to be close to matching, I wouldn't want to make the rears much darker...just add some heat protection.

There's seldom talk about moonroofs, given that's not a standard option. And for the eyebrow sun strips, I seldom see anything except "5%" or "none" here. Wanted to hear others' opinions, if they had them!

The front windows aren't untinted. They're 70% VLT.
