What in Gods name is this engine sound?

Temperature was hovering in the 30 degF range when I started my 2.0L Ecoboost Maverick. This sound was coming from somewhere toward the back of the engine. Anybody know what it is and its source?

whomever he spoke to at FoMoCo marketing customer service would not know, and they would refer him to the nearest Ford dealership.

the dealership person answering the phone then either wouldn't know, or wouldn't care to guess based on the description of the sound, and would schedule a service appointment for next week.

after the appointment they would tell him no fault found, and 50/50 on whether they told the OP it's the high pressure fuel pump. same result on MTC about a thousand times faster.

I had the same reaction on my first cold start at 330 miles odometer. To be honest it traumatized me to some degree. I have spent a stupid amount of time and money on sound deadening efforts as outlined in my link. My next project is removing the air intake hose that runs behind the HPFP and wrapping it in closed cell foam insulation tape. If you are not as OCD about engine noises as I am and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars I suggest adding the Lincoln Engine cover: https://parts.ford.com/shop/en/us/engine/other-engine-parts/engine-cover-20l-p-k2gz6a949b
You will need hardware Part#: W520201S450B , Part#: W714647S450B , and Part#: AA5Z6N958A from the diagram, as well.
You will still hear the direct injection but it will take the jagged knife edge off the sound.

It's just the direct injection noise.first time i drove our maverick i laughed.sounds like a sewing machine compared to my hemi ram with an aftermarket exhaust.

Get out of the truck QUICK!!!, only kidding, My FX4 fuel pump makes noise when cold but not that loud and gets MUCH better when warmed up. Also I have a ford top engine cover which could have something to do with it. there hard to find, search engine covers, top right corner you can get all the part #s think I paid about 80 bucks with hardware.

Thats a factory cover for the 2.0, Maverick does not come with it. engine compartment looks much neater and cuts down on some noise, theres also NO hood insulation which could help.

Yea that’s the pump. I also got the engine cover when I first got the truck and hated the noise. I did a decibel test with and without the cover and it actually helps lower the noise- by 1 dB lol. Both inside and out of the car.

Anyway I had to take it off after 8 months cause a squirrel started tryna live under it using the engine as warmth when it started getting cold out haha. Now I don’t mind the sewing machine fuel pump noise anymore but it does seem louder on cold starts in the cold winter temps.
