Though I just replaced the cabin filter for the second time on my sedan in 2 years and even though I'm in a dusty environment I could hardly see anything. But easy enough to replace. Since my Maverick is now over a year old, I'll see how easy it is to replace. No need to wait until it is obvious to replace it myself.

90% of the reason for a cabin filter is to keep your evaporator core coils inside the HVAC box from getting clogged with all that junk and eventually requiring replacement at great cost.

Not like vehicles made in the 1980's and back when you could lean under the dash, split the HVAC box and clean the evaporator core. Nowadays, it is a total dash removal to get to the HVAC box for repair and replacement of the evaporator core.

Pop open your hood and you’ll see the air inlet vents under the passenger side wipers. Sometimes I’ll wipe that area down with a rag wetted with WD-40 because it makes my cabin smell good.

Hey, you don’t want to change it? Your business………
But, at least, take it out, turn it upside down, rap it on the sidewalk (or whatever),
put it back in (right side up), and your good to go for another
month or so, depending………..
Five minutes.

1 - Because most people's brains need oxygen, and that isn't manufactured in the cabin.
Without fresh air coming in, what's worse is CO2 builds up in the cabin, because it isn't adequately vented. After several hours, you could pass out.

2 - Always using recirc increases moisture in the cab, and assists your ventilation system in the production of mold. Bad idea. Good practice is to let it run without recirc before you shut down.

3 - Using recirc with a heater will fog up your windows so the truck is trying to give you a hint by turning it off.
Using recirc is good when it's hot, because you cool down the cooler air, and it is usually drier, so fogged windows isn't a much of an issue. Even then you need to turn it off once in a while so you get some fresh air instead of rebreathing the CO2 you've been exhaling the entire time.
Keep it up long enough and it will put you to sleep without realizing it.
The cabin isn't hermetically sealed, there's always some fresh air getting in. There are vents at the back of the cabin that allow some fresh air in at all times. On an Explorer, they're on the side all the way at the back , hidden by the bumper cover. An F150 has them on the back of the cab between it and the bed, I'm not sure where they sit on a Mav, but they're there. I've driven all day with my AC recirculating and never passed out.

Also recirculating air with the AC on removes moisture, while running it with the heat will increase it.

Larry the Mav was smelling a bit stinky. Changed the cabin filter and it smelled nice again. The old filter wasn't packed with crap but bringing home fast food can leave a stink on the filter (at least in my cast). 😂

According to the local robot continium..
"
Air Recirculation Mode in Cars
When a car is in recirculation mode, it does not take in external air. Instead, it circulates the air that is already inside the cabin. This mode is designed to enhance the efficiency of the air conditioning system by cooling the already-cooled air, which helps to lower the cabin temperature more quickly.

Benefits of Recirculation Mode
  • Faster Cooling: By using the air already in the cabin, the AC can cool the interior more rapidly.
  • Improved Air Quality: It prevents outside pollutants, dust, and allergens from entering the vehicle.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Reduces the load on the AC system, which can help save fuel.
When to Use Recirculation Mode
  • Hot Weather: Ideal for quickly cooling the cabin on hot days.
  • Heavy Traffic: Useful in congested areas to avoid inhaling exhaust fumes.
  • Strong Odors: Effective when driving through areas with unpleasant smells.
Limitations of Recirculation Mode
  • Humidity Buildup: Prolonged use can lead to moisture accumulation, which may fog up windows.
  • Stale Air: Continuous recirculation can result in stale air if not switched to fresh air periodically.
In summary, recirculation mode is beneficial for cooling and maintaining air quality, but it should be used judiciously to avoid potential drawbacks. "

As far as the fog up effect when using recirc and heat, that happens because the increased internal humidity will cause condensation on the glass, because the glass goes below the dewpoint temperature. That doesn't happen when the glass is heated by the sun when it's hot.

Agreed! And god forbid you roll the window down when driving 😆. I was going to throw mine out and not replace it but apparently new cars need it to filter the air going to the heater blower motor? Seems like a money grab. Guess the blower motors on new vehicles are not as good as the ones we had when young .iam 66 years old.

Wow - That's a great price.
The same item at the local O'Reillys is $41 !
EDIT:
Unfortunately for me or anyone else living in Arizona, Rock Auto won't ship any parts to the state because of an ongoing tax dispute.
It would have been nice if they mentioned that before the order was complete... :(
