You like breathing in black mold, pollen and other crap that may eventually get into the HVAC system? The motorcraft cabin air filters are also electrostatic so they tend to reduce or eliminate most odors. I can't speak to other brands if they also have these anti-microbial and electrostatic properties or are just plain old air particulate filters.

No kidding. My 91 has a serious mold issue in the evaporator, and the cabin STINKS! A distict mix of rotton organic material and sour air that makes you want to ralph.

Trying to clean it out has been an absolute disaster. Now if there was an AIR FILTER for the cabin, it would have got caught up in the filter. But no, instead I've been deep cleaning every crevasse trying to get rid of it.

So if you're driving on the highway behind a truck, do you want to blast its exhaust fumes into your face? How about an industrial zone, do you want to blast those vapors into your nose while driving past? Do you want to coat your HVAC system with this crap too, so that over the years it all builds up like plaque?

Like really, what did you think it was for? You know your house has a filter in its HVAC too right? Why do you think its there?

Its like a purse for your blower motor. Also it keeps your evap core from plugging up with debris.

For one thing it keeps the blower motor from being destroyed by debris.
That is the main purpose.

The “cabin” air filter is filtering fresh air & debris being sucked in through outside vents near the windshield wipers. Unless you have “recirculate” turned on - which tends to get the cabin feeling “stuffy” after a while. Can fog up the windows on a cold day…

"Outside air filter" would be a more appropriate name. All the leaves and debris on those pictures are from outside not inside. So a better question is why do we need air coming in from outside when we dont want it to? I always use recirculate. The problem is it only stays that way (in heater mode) for a short time. Is this some sort of government regulation? Or Fords idea. It is the same way on my Transit. Does the inside air really go through the filter? I have been stuck behind a smelly diesel POS many times and I get to smell their toxic exhaust if my heater is on and "recirculate" has kicked off and I did not catch it in time prior to getting behind a jerk driving a diesel with an after market chip so he can "coal roll" every one who has not done a damn thing to him. In AC mode I can drive all day long in both my Maverick and my Transit in "recirculate" mode. So if it is OK in AC why not when heating? ☮

1 - Because most people's brains need oxygen, and that isn't manufactured in the cabin.
Without fresh air coming in, what's worse is CO2 builds up in the cabin, because it isn't adequately vented. After several hours, you could pass out.

2 - Always using recirc increases moisture in the cab, and assists your ventilation system in the production of mold. Bad idea. Good practice is to let it run without recirc before you shut down.

3 - Using recirc with a heater will fog up your windows so the truck is trying to give you a hint by turning it off.
Using recirc is good when it's hot, because you cool down the cooler air, and it is usually drier, so fogged windows isn't a much of an issue. Even then you need to turn it off once in a while so you get some fresh air instead of rebreathing the CO2 you've been exhaling the entire time.
Keep it up long enough and it will put you to sleep without realizing it.

I would rather deal with the risks associated with nontoxic CO2 than be sucking in toxic brake dust particles and toxic rubber tire dust particles and toxic exhaust fumes that contain carbon monoxide. Or feces particles when I drive by the huge city sewer plant! In other words, I want to keep the dirty toxic shitty air outside....outside.

I have never had a fogging up issue or a mold issue. And I dont believe there is a CO2 issue in 5 or 10 minutes when my recirculating will kick off.

Summer heat holds more moisture in the air than wintertime cold.

I have never heard of anyone passing out in their vehicle because of lack of oxygen. Maybe in extreme cases it has happened but at the very least it must be extremely rare. ☮

It's actually not the lack of oxygen, it's the increase of CO2 that gets you first.

Carbon dioxide acts as an asphyxiant.
As CO2 levels in a closed cabin rise, carbon dioxide replaces the oxygen you need.
When you don't get enough oxygen, your brain doesn't function properly.
That's why the truck won't let you leave it on recirc "all the time".

This would take several hours, but it will happen if you never let in fresh air.

Put a Ozone machine in the car and let it run for 2 hours with the AC on. Problem should be gone. Ozone machines on amazon are cheap.
