I just joined the forum, but haven't seen anything on the universal Werner rack from Lowe's. I purchased it for $369 and modified it to fit. In standard form it was way too tall. I used a metal blade on my miter saw and cut 7 inches off the bottom of the uprights, then used the scrap as a template to drill the needed holes. Adjust this measurement for your needs. After that just assemble as per the instructions. It sits about 3 inches higher than the roof and will suit my kayak fine.

Since you are into modifying it, I would add cleats midway on the posts. Some models of some brands have them already, mine have these. Just type in trac rack cleats. They give you a ton of tie down options.

Nice job and good on you for safe a few bucks on the more pricey options available for the MAV.

I assume you had to shorten the rails as well?

No, the rails are original length. 9 inch overhang each side.

Nice find OP, thanks for sharing. Did you have to modify the clamp at all, or just reduce the height of the uprights? Any thoughts on how this might/might not play with a tonneau cover?

Also, the Lowes page showed an alternate rack; different brand but very similar, same price, and in black.

No modification of the clamps were required, just shortened the uprights. I don't think this will work with a tonneau cover.

Quick update on this rack. Clamping it on with just the included rubber pads was resulting in warping of the plastic bed rail caps. I took it back off and cut down some vinyl plank flooring scraps to the same dimension as the pads. Placing these on top of the pads distributed the pressure and fixed the warping issue.
