Mostly just a rant thread, and a possible warning for anyone who gets locked out of their vehicle.

[skip the next 2 paragraphs if you don't want to read about me being dumb and ranting]

I was out mountain biking alone today before snow hits and closes the trails down for the year probably. Loaded my bike in the bed when done, threw all my stuff in the back (including my pouch with the key in it, and my phone that I had unlocked the vehicle with). Shut the back door, and the doors all locked. I was the only one in the most remote parking lot of a state park, it's 25 degrees outside, my phone and keys are locked inside, so I had to ride my bike (with no gloves) about 2 miles to the ranger station. Call Progressive to use roadside since I couldn't use the Ford app on a good Samaritan's phone (multi factor went to my phone, locked inside), and 45 minutes later a tow truck arrives.

For 2 hours the AAA driver tried to get inside with a metal hook, a lot of it with me trying to guide him to the door unlock. I can see that the door trim and the paint around the door is being absolutely demolished. Finally he gives up and wants to tow the pickup to a locksmith, but it's in park with the parking brake on too. I see him putting it on skates and am like, no fudging way we are going to demolish a transmission today too yanking this up on a tow truck, so make a decision to just break the window in with a hammer and move along since it will be 2 more hours for someone to come pick me up, but the park closes in 1 hour, at which point I will have no shelter as winter bears down. Drive 2 hours home with no drivers side rear window (snowing most of the way). Now I have to get a window replaced, all this fixed, and file a claim with AAA for all the damages.

Lessons learned:
  • The vehicle can randomly lock, my friend who owns a tow truck also said Fords are notorious for randomly locking them when he's hauling them.
  • Call a locksmith if you're ever locked out, unlocking this car with a hook is not for amateurs obviously due to the lock button location, and the handle being hard to get at too
Good times... :crying:

How about a third key hidden somewhere just in case?

Very well could have been, but I don't remember opening the front door. I was pretty tired and just tossing all my stuff in the car to get going. After this incident I am going to look into how much it cost to have the dealer add that keypad so I can lock the key in the vehicle while I'm biking, and have two ways to get back in (keypad and ford pass).

Feeling better about smashing the window in though, or I probably would have had even longer and wilder day + a destroyed transmission and / or parking brake.
I wonder what the price difference is between a door window and the back window?

The back window of the cab is considerably more expensive, probably the most expensive piece of glass on the vehicle. I broke out the rear passenger window, which was like ~$350 for aftermarket, $450 for OE Ford glass if I recall. Still not cheap though. I think my Prius C rear passenger window was like $200 just 3 years ago, and it was laminated glass. I vacuumed out the storage beneath the rear seat today and am still finding glass pieces months later.

Good to know. I had a few "Oh Shit" moments myself when locking the door accidentally with my hand while getting out. (This subject covered ad nauseum elsewhere)

It's good to know which window is the cheapest to replace.

In the 1990's, before most of you were born, I locked the keys in my Toyota pickup. It had wing windows, as was they style at the time, and while trying to pry one open enough to reach in with a coat hanger to unlock it I broke the window. I went to the dealer in Denver to buy a replacement the next week, and it was around $20 (for the part, I put it in myself). The next time I locked the keys inside, I just got a hammer and smashed the wing window. Then I learned that I should hide a key underneath; not a hammer.

I miss wing windows. Now there's an upgrade.

I smoked for 18 years, until I moved out of my parents house.

And yet, I never held a cigarette in my hand and smoked one. That includes 🦨 skunk weed.

This was back in the days when homes, cars and teachers lounges had ashtrays.
Nobody stepped outside to smoke a cigarette, cigar or pipe.

Oh look.
You could enjoy your hamburger and fries with a side of cigarette.🤢🤮

and food at every restaurant tasted like cigarettes because they let people smoke wherever they felt like it. (smell is one of the main components of flavor)

I'm waiting for a facial recognition option to unlock the doors and "start the engine". They have that for phones, why not for car doors?

I unfortunately smoked for 30 years. Nicotine is a very addictive substance. I remember when they started mandating separate smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants. It would literally be opposite sides of the aisle, no barrier, no filtration for the air, nothing. Glad to say I am coming up on 16 years smoke free. Best thing I ever did was quit. worst thing I ever did was smoke the first 1.

I've always said, "I can understand why anyone would smoke their first one. Could never understand why anyone would smoke their second one...."

My late wife, who had type 2 diabetes, nagged me for 25 years to quit. I told her I would if she NEVER ate another piece of chocolate. She said "chocolate isn't as bad." Her addiction led to her death at 59.

Once I quit smoking they became useless and only created more wind noise.
In some climates (northern CA), they were great on some cars for defogging the windows. (of course, a VW didn't have a dash that could mount a vent for the front window . . .

I dunno.

My adult twins quickly found that they could unlock one another's; iPhones. (not that they didn't know one another's passwords, anyway).

One of the few upside of covid was the change in ventilation in public facilities to suck air straight up. I was able to watch a game in a bar only a few feet from a smoker without breathing the crap..
