For anyone curious, a reputable body shop quoted $3,900 to get all the paint corrected, weather strip replaced, and interior door panel replaced. There was more damage to the driver's door I didn't notice myself because just looking at it pissed me off so much.

So begins the insurance claim hell.

But you never lock your keys in the car, so you never have to use it! 😁

R (1).gif
no, I used it a LOT. That way I don't have to carry my keys with me on runs or bike rides, or anywhere I don't want a wad of keys cramping my style. Well, I used it a lot before I got the Mav. I'd use the keypad at least 3x a day, sometimes more than a dozen times.

Was coming in to post the video you did.

That AAA guy was a total hack. I do actually have a bladder like the video shows and also some plastic wedges that don't damage the paint that you slide in and create the gap manually.

I'm not sure I could do it in 3 minutes but no more than 10 and I wouldn't have hurt OPs vehicle!

Sorry to hear of the event.
Do you do lockouts professionally?

Given the cost of the repairs that are about 3x what I had in mind ($4,500 including the window, although it's possible the body shop quoted way high knowing insurance), I am really in a jam now needing to line up my ducks to get the damage claim to pay out.

Seems to me like the guy who came had no training, and the wrong tools. I would like to say I've "asked other professions in the industry", and they agree it was done completely incorrectly, with the wrong tools, and not be lying myself.

I do not do lock outs professionally, however I own the exact tools that the guy in the posted video got into the Maverick - and I have gotten into dozens of vehicles over the years, sometimes without the proper tools and causing a little damage that the owner acknowledged was okay.

I have NEVER come close to doing what the guy did to your vehicle.

EDIT: It bugs the shit out of my wife. "Oh you're stuck? I've got tow straps. Your battery is dead? Let me jump you. Flat tire? I've got an impact wrench and inflator let's do it. Locked out of your car? Let me grab my air bladder and long reach tool....

It bugs the shit out of my wife.
mine is bothered when I do such things.

I live across the street from a school. I helped the same teacher Ito her car three ties over a couple months a while back!

And several jump starts and even a couple of rides to the auto parts store for various folks!

Actually, I have had mine automatically lock itself at least two witnessed times. Both were in my driveway while washing it. The key was not in my pocket so it rules out accidental pushing of buttons which might have accounted for the other couple of times it locked itself.
I'll believe it when I see it. My Maverick must not have these faulty locks, because this has never happened to me in 3+ years of ownership.

Mostly just a rant thread, and a possible warning for anyone who gets locked out of their vehicle.

[skip the next 2 paragraphs if you don't want to read about me being dumb and ranting]

I was out mountain biking alone today before snow hits and closes the trails down for the year probably. Loaded my bike in the bed when done, threw all my stuff in the back (including my pouch with the key in it, and my phone that I had unlocked the vehicle with). Shut the back door, and the doors all locked. I was the only one in the most remote parking lot of a state park, it's 25 degrees outside, my phone and keys are locked inside, so I had to ride my bike (with no gloves) about 2 miles to the ranger station. Call Progressive to use roadside since I couldn't use the Ford app on a good Samaritan's phone (multi factor went to my phone, locked inside), and 45 minutes later a tow truck arrives.

For 2 hours the AAA driver tried to get inside with a metal hook, a lot of it with me trying to guide him to the door unlock. I can see that the door trim and the paint around the door is being absolutely demolished. Finally he gives up and wants to tow the pickup to a locksmith, but it's in park with the parking brake on too. I see him putting it on skates and am like, no fudging way we are going to demolish a transmission today too yanking this up on a tow truck, so make a decision to just break the window in with a hammer and move along since it will be 2 more hours for someone to come pick me up, but the park closes in 1 hour, at which point I will have no shelter as winter bears down. Drive 2 hours home with no drivers side rear window (snowing most of the way). Now I have to get a window replaced, all this fixed, and file a claim with AAA for all the damages.

Lessons learned:
  • The vehicle can randomly lock, my friend who owns a tow truck also said Fords are notorious for randomly locking them when he's hauling them.
  • Call a locksmith if you're ever locked out, unlocking this car with a hook is not for amateurs obviously due to the lock button location, and the handle being hard to get at too
Good times... :crying:
I've had similar issues luckily my wife had my spare set of keys and I unlocked the door with the remote on another occasion it was a slightly warm summer day and I left my dog in the car for just a little bit he's a long haired Samoyed and I came back and it was locked with the keys in it I thought perhaps he sat on the keys and locked the doors himself. Good thing I had rolled one of the windows down for the dog), ( also mountain bike)in remote sections of Northwest Washington. I found a locksmith in Seattle who can cut a new key for me and I'll tape it under the trailer receiver. But it will cost me $100 and a ferryboat ride from one of the Puget Sound Islands to get to Seattle. Your experience is now making all that sound dirt cheap thanks for the info!

What i think is dumb is how hard it is to put in neutral if its not started. Modern vehicles, modern issues.
this happened to me w/ new Mercedes SUV. Brand new. Radiator issues; car stalled out in traffic - wouldn’t start. Long story short, the only tow that worked was calling Mercedes directly

Just a little update on this situation for anyone interested:

1. It wasn't AAA that did this (title edited), just happened to be an old clapped out AAA branded tow truck that another company had purchased. Why it wasn't de-badged, who knows ($ I assume), but sorry AAA for that. I didn't know until the report came from Agero on who the service provider actually was. Sadly the quality of the work was probably more reflective of the state of rural America (I was a bit out in the sticks); i.e. who wants to run a tow truck out there. I was thinking about this over Christmas when I saw probably 40 vehicles on the side of the interstate in a 500 mile stretch to Colorado, because the last time I had a tow 10 years ago it was in NE Colorado where there is almost nothing but thoughts and prayers if you're stranded.

2. Agero is paying for $3,200 of the $3,800 repair quote. They took me breaking out the window as an excuse to dock $600, although that was not part of the body shop quote. I don't feel like fighting that hard since I was pretty sure they were going to find a way out of all of it, leaving me with a bag of **** or doing a comprehensive claim I'd be paying for years in insurance. At least I can skip a $600 door panel and probably fix some light scratches myself on it.

3. I decided to get the keypad installed for future use so I can lock the key inside when I'm biking or hiking and have 2 ways to get back in (keypad or Ford pass), but just to add one more WTF to this, the dealer makes getting that so hard. I had sit with a sales guy for 30 minutes while he figured it out, then call in a week later when they never called about the part. It was $200 up front for the part + install, but then when I got there for my appointment today. the parts department tried to charge me $315 for it because sales and parts (at this dealership) apparently don't talk. After driving home to get my receipt, the parts guy still wanted to find a way to bill me for more. I usually give people a pretty long leash, but holy crap, I should have just pirated the Ford software and figured out how to program it myself.

Hoping the body shop comes through and this is all fixed in 3 weeks to 95-98% new.

I had a similar situation and ended up using https://royallocksmithfl.com/locksmith-west-palm-beach-fl/ for a quick fix. They showed up fast, didn’t spring any surprise fees on me, and rekeyed everything with zero hassle. If you’re stressing about security or need someone reliable on short notice, they were solid for me.

my experience trying to get a keypqd installed was similar. After having them order the part, I made an appointment for 7am when they first opened up to have this 15 minute 'SERVICE' performed. Around 2-3 in the afternoon after sitting there waiting, they informed me that they ordered the wrong keypad. I took a day off work for this. I won't be trying to have a disservice do any elective procedures for me anymore. Thanks, Ford. With my Transit(not Connect) I ordered the keypad online and installed it myself. Ford changed the ability to do that, requiring you to go to a disservice center (and spend hundreds of $ for a $90 keypad+"service").

I went old school and hide a key underneath. I'm also afraid of losing a key when running or cycling, and I sure as heck aren't going to carry a heavy phone around with me doing those things. I have an idea to install a hidden switch that would unlock the door or roll down the window. Should be easy.

If I had a do-over, I would have just ordered the kit off the Ford website rather than walking in an interacting with a salesmen. Unfortunately since everything at the dealership revolves around sales commissions, and no one is making anything off this accessory, they don't care. I just found it hilarious I was being shook down for another $300 when I had already bought it.
