Rear-ended at a light waiting to turn. Think she hit us about 45mph square on. Here's my question: has anyone had a high speed rear impact where airbags didn't deploy and the front seats fell flat?

Holding off on pics for now as it just happened and we're working through insurance.

glad it seems you're relatively OK after the impact.
a rear impact would force you toward the rear, front airbags would accelerate that.
now wondering if collapsing seats are as designed like the break away steering column.

That is a big shunt. If you managed to walk away from it injury free, who cares about the rest.

From what I've read on this Forum (so it must be true), you are probably looking a complete write-off.

Glad your ok from what we know. Doesn't sound good for the truck. Search this forum for terms like: totaled, rear ended, crush zone, etc. you'll be amazed to what minor looking issues, at the surface, ends of totaling the truck. Good Luck. Post pics and other details when you can.

Agree. This worries me since I have kids in the back seats a lot of the time.
I'd really love to post photos, but I'm concerned about where this will be headed. The moment I can, I'll make a new post with them.

I'll tell you this, though, my headrest almost completely came out as well and there's blood from the back of my head on the rear seat, exactly where my oldest kid's face would have been. Not to mention their upper legs would have been pinned. My youngest sits behind my wife, and while her seat stopped about an inch shy of being flat, he too would have had his legs pinned.

Here's an interesting read: Seatback failures: A hidden danger in many vehicles

I am truly sorry to hear about the accident and your injuries.

I used to be an Auto Claims Adjuster for a major insurance company.

The accident pictures are yours, so there should be no issue with posting the images, despite an open/ongoing insurance claim or injury attorneys involved.

Additionally, I would suggest you contact/retain an injury attorney today (if you have not already).

Insurance (yours or theirs), will not compensate you for injuries other than the actual medical bills incurred and possibly a small amount called PIP (personal injury protection).
An injury attorney works beyond these limits on your behalf and they typically get paid from the settlement, not upfront.

And I agree with others, your seat should not have reclined from impact. Your injury attorney could possibly use that information to your benefit, possibly indicating how hard of an impact you felt resulting in damages and injuries.

Best of luck.

The air bags are designed to not go off on rear collisions. I was hit about a year ago from behind. I was nearly stopped in my MKX and the other driver was doing at least 65 and air bags did not deploy. The conversation I had with a Ford Master tech that I work with was in a direct rear collision the air bags do not go off in order to prevent inadvertent injury from an unnecessary air bag. As for the seat backs, that sounds like a major issue and quite concerning.

I think OP meant the rear seat folded flat, not the front?

I definitely meant the driver and front passenger seats collapsed backwards.

This☝

Airbags are designed to not deploy in a rear-end collision. They wouldn't do any good, anyway, when you're knocked backward.

How fast was she going?, with seat catches etc , hard to say how much blunt weight force they can take, but if unlucky and got shoved under a semi, you might considering being lucky
