I definitely meant the driver and front passenger seats collapsed backwards.
That is very very concerning. I have my kids in the back 99% of the time....

How fast was she going?, with seat catches etc , hard to say how much blunt weight force they can take, but if unlucky and got shoved under a semi, you might considering being lucky
She was likely going right around 45, but hard to say definitively. Witnesses said no indication of braking.

Truly this. I was ready to replace it until I realized what happened. On top of that, our only current vehicle is a Bronco Sport, so....doesn't feel good riding in it with the kids and it being essentially the same car.

Funny, my wife's vehicle is also a Bronco Sport... So same concern as you.

Sorry about the accident. Glad you seem to all be in good shape. Please do keep the community here informed with any other details. My kids are older and all but the last is driving themselves, but I also play dad taxi to groups often and really share the concern of you and others about the seats not holding up under massive rear impact.

The seats should not have collapsed. This indicates that the amount of force from the impact was severe enough to cause your body weight to break the reclining gear in the seat back.

It has been a while so my memory is fuzzy but I believe Ford had this issue with their Contour sedans from the late 90s. A recall was issued and new seat hardware was installed.

As for the seat back failure, I think it was CBS / 60 Minutes that did a big story on this issue a year or so ago. Fairly common and prevalent across many brands. Babies in car seats have been killed from this. File complaint with NHTSA so it can be added to the roster. Glad you are otherwise OK.

Rear-ended at a light waiting to turn. Think she hit us about 45mph square on. Here's my question: has anyone had a high speed rear impact where airbags didn't deploy and the front seats fell flat?
Holding off on pics for now as it just happened and we're working through insurance.
For the safety of all of us.
Please report this to.

I agree.
I feel the OP has a duty to report this.
