Bruce is in for a busy week. Driving from central Alabama to the North Carolina mountains pulling the scout trailer.

GVWR 2990lbs; won't be close to that. Oddly enough, I still needed to use the 4" drop hitch.

Your troop trailer is much lighter than my son's troop trailer. We were a 'bring everything' sorta troop and the main trailer had about 1000 lbs of cast iron cookware in addition to a bunch of other heavy stuff like propane tanks, griddles, tables, canopies, etc. It usually came in around 6500lbs when packed for a week of summer camp. We had a smaller trailer that was usually filled with the scout's bags, tents, etc. That one probably came in close to 3500 when full. Luckily, most of the troop dads had full size pickups so getting the trailers there and back was never an issue. Oddly, the heaviest trailer we had was the canoe trailer, which apparently was some old school all welded steel behemoth. They left that for the guys with SuperDuty type trucks.

Have fun at camp! Going to Daniel Boone or somewhere else?

Daniel Boone. Truthfully, our actual scout trailer is the same as yours and has everything. But it can only be towed (or stopped) by full-size trucks. Heading to camp, we only have one going both directions and that dad isn't even staying at camp.

The cub scouts have a smaller trailer (in image) I can pull, which provides for more flexibility when traveling interstate since we aren't putting our towing eggs in one basket with all vehicles going able to pull it. My wife's Explorer is also going and has a higher tow rating than the Maverick (5,500 ls). Plus, we stripped the trailer of everything we don't need this week. Most of the weight will be gear trunks.

Boone is my favorite camp in the southeast. It is a jewel! I supposed if the scouts are eating mostly in the mess hall, the gear needs are certainly lighter. Our deal was that the Dads always wanted better food and we cooked up a storm on most camps.

We serve a lot of military kids or the dads are active/veterans. So, most of us don't think the food is bad.

This will be my second and last trip to Boone. Daughter got her Eagle a year ago and my son is on track by next summer. This is my sixth straight summer camp as scoutmaster (we hosted our own during Covid). Time to hand it over.

Welcome from North Carolina! The Blue Ridge Mountains are some of the most beautiful. Boone in general is a great region with lots to offer. I’ve never been to the scout camp but I’m sure it will be a good time!

Lots of fun. I used to be a Scout & WEBLOS Leader, as my Dad was too. We went to Camp Odekota in WI. Had a similar trailer. Have great times!!

Successful trip! Averaged 12MPG on the way up and 13MPG on the way back. On the return trip I had less gear in the trailer and we also lost 3,000ft of elevation. But the truck handled without issue. The lighter trailer was pushed around a little bit more but I never felt like the Maverick couldn't handle it.

Downside of towing with the Maverick is the gas tank is small when getting "towing" gas mileage so I had to make a couple stops on the way up to fill up. But those coincided with bladder capacity.

Of course, the weather was stupidly perfect at camp. Highs in the mid-70s with lows in the 50s. Returned to 96 degrees in Alabama this morning...
