I don't know. For me we get snow and freezing rain. I watched a u-tube video comparison of several trucks. One happened to be the Santa Cruz which comes standard with a roll up tonneau cover. They couldn't use the bed because the cover was frozen.

I originally was going to order a soft tri-fold tonneau cover. Because of restraints and holding up the build I opted to look aftermarket. I ended up with a hard tri-fold which even though there are three panels it does not fold up completely. The last panel stays and the rest folds on top. It is easily though completely removed allowing the full use of the bed. It doesn't take long to reinstall after removal. So far I haven't had to remove it. I think it was like 360 from Amazon

I opted for hard because many threads or posts saying the soft at times flutters and makes noise. Also the hard also provided more security. For the price I could easily replace it down the road.

I understand your concern about covering up the back window. The few times you need the bed, just remove it and store it in the garage until you get home. Or buy a hitch transport and secure them behind the truck. Several options available.
Just installed a hard trifold that cost about a third of the Ford model and seems to me to be just as sturdy. I wanted something secure enough for locking stuff up. I don’t think it blocks as much of the back window as a hard roll up

I couldn’t justify the added cost for a hard roll up. Had them in the past. The Rough Country soft top looks awesome and works great for under 200. Very happy with the choice.
If you have a lot of bike you aren’t going to haul them with pu without a bed cover unless you remove some wheels

I've looked at so many tonneau covers I'm going .... ...do they all come with plastic lock-down clamps or are there any with metal? I know how plastic can fail, believe me! Should just say the picture is of a John Deere ride on mower re-build, because they used a plastic drive gear...

Ok.......??? But my question was about hard and soft roll up tonneau covers still using Velcro.
I don't know about other models but the Bak Revolvers (also sold as the OEM Ford hard roll-up) don't use Velcro, they have metal rails that swing in from each side and lock in every section of the tonneau along its entire length.

It's tough to explain but easy to understand when you see it in action

The added advantage of a soft top is if you lose your keys you can still get into the bed with a sharp knife
I don't keep anyhing in there so its not a worry.

Thank you. 🤝
I guess manufacturers have realized that velcro wears out.
