After I'd already signed the paperwork and they walked me out to the vehicle.
Oof. I would never sign for something so major without fully inspecting it first.

As I've said, this is a sunk cost and don't waste any more emotional capital on it. Find the new cover you want and be happy.

And lose CAD 1,200! I wouldn't give up so easily for that kind of dough.

The money is spent. Decision made. Paperwork completed. $1200 CAD spent and devoting any additional emotional resources towards it and it just gets worse.

Just to clarify, i didnt sign off sight unseen. Truck came in on a Monday, i inspected it, test drove it etc.
During the week I got my paperwork sorted out, dealer ordered/installed accessories. Saturday morning I went to pick it up. I didn't think I'd need a second inspection as I was under the impression a ford dealer would be competent but here we are.

I will probably try contacting them or at least posting the one I have for sale.

I can’t tell you what to do but I can chime in with what I have. When I was looking for a Maverick I was planning on adding a trifold but ended up buying a used truck that already has a hard roll up. It is better by far in my opinion. I only lose 2-3 inches of bed when I open it! It is just as secure and solid as the hard trifold I’ve seen. (Yesi know it looks soft but that’s just the outer part. ) Pics for reference and the brand.

Worst case scenario, find what you want on the used marketplace, then sell this one. You'd be surprised at the deals you can find. A Ford hard rollup would not be my first choice, because I know the vinyl doesn't hold up well, but one recently popped up near me for $200 with rails. It was a fresh take-off. I'd be all over it for $200 vs the $1200 Ford wants. I recently paid ~$1K for a new Lomax Stance. I see the regular Lomax tri-folds often for ~$500 used. I'd rather have bought a used tri-fold, but the only one remotely near me was $700 and the seller would not come down much.

Good luck with whatever you do!

Hello all, I have yet another post on tonneau covers to add to the forum.

Only this time I'm seeking advice/validation on my situation.

When I ordered my truck, the dealer said the tri-fold tonneau cover from ford could hold the order up. Weather was going to get bad soon, and my wife's car sucks to drive in the snow. (Open diff fwd). so i couldn't afford any delays. I said no problem we can order it through the dealer.

Fast forwards to January and my truck comes in. Great. Dealer gets the winter tires and tonneau cover all set up for me.

When I show up to pick it up, not only is it not a ford oem cover but it's a triad 2 fold. On a 4.5 foot bed.

Okay, no problem I thought. I'll live with it and see how it goes.

Well so far it's been crap. I've had to take it off 3 times completely in the last month to use my bed, because who puts a 2 fold on a 4.5 foot bed? Folded back my usable space is 3 feet?! the hardware is jank and I'm already missing pieces, it seals well enough, but I'm using the bed less like a trunk than I originally anticipated. I paid 1200$ canadian loonies for this crap expecting a ford tri fold and got this crap.

Now 2 questions,

1. Am I justified in my frustration at not getting an oem cover or did the dealer do me a favor in some roundabout way?
2. Is it worth it to sell this turd and try finding someone selling the oem ford cover?

Just very frustrated at this.
You should be pissed. Make a stink.

As a temporary fix I got the cheapest tri fold on Amazon but I like it for the long haul.

The time to make that stink was at the time of purchase. Not 3 months later.

No dealer going to work with that.

What was on the bill of sale? That’s what matters. If it says Ford tri-fold, he has a case. If it says what he actually got, then I’d say not.

“it says ford trifold and after 90 days i realized its not a trifold”?

Come on. Also as shady as dealers are they are not going to list a product and part number they did not sell. Period.

Dealer sold OP cover that got them the greatest profit and OP didn’t catch it or didn’t care at time of purchase enough to make a stink.

Dealer not gonna commit fraud for a few bills and if they did - OP would have posted a photo already showing the trifold product number listed.

OP is groveling bc they aren’t happy with cover.

Plausible deniability. I assure you the dealer may try. My dealer pretended not to know that they shouldn’t re-invoice my order and a few other things like slipping in stuff I didn’t agree to. They were just hoping some of it would stick. Now take that few bills and multiply it by every customer they have. It’s definitely worth it.

Man that stinks. My dealer said the same to me about holding up the order so I went after market. I got the AutoSaver88 from Amazon. It’s trifold and has done well by my standards. Plus it was maybe $150 when I purchased it.
Beware venting your frustrations here because that’s pheromones for the trolls and keyboard warriors to emerge from their parents basement. I would think you have every reason to be in your feelings about it. I had a similar issue with a dash cam from Ford and was not aware of what I was getting versus the part I thought I was getting. Maybe you can sell it but I’m sure you will take a hit doing so. Hope it turns out better for you.

You have confirmation bias here. You’re convinced a dealer did something shady when OP has provided zero evidence to support their claim.

We know he removed the tri-fold cover (unnecessarily) at the advice of his dealer but from there we have no evidence the dealer did anything wrong. Only OP said dealer (apparently) said.

Want to trust OP but things not lining up 100%. Let’s not blame the dealer yet.

I wish I could answer your question and I am sorry you are having an unpleasant experience. I myself am waiting on RealTruck to ship my tonneau cover. A BAK Revolver. I definitely wanted a roll up as opposed to a tri-fold and a bi-fold sounds even worse.

Good Luck.
I have a BAK Revolver X4TS from RealTruck on my buggy and am happy with it. Had it on almost 2 years and have not had a need to remove it. Just roll it up.

Personally I don't think that you are going to get any satisfaction from the dealer after 3 months, maybe a free oil change. You should have at least mentioned it before leaving the dealer. It sounds like the dealer, sales person, sales manager was not up to date on the ordering or accessories from Ford.
When I ordered my Maverick in 2022, I added the Ford hard rollup from the factory, The salesman later suggested that I remove the tonneau from the factory order and put it on as a dealer added
Ford accessory and they put price down as the factory installed price. In 2022 parts and accessory constraints, shortages were very common resulting in some delays of months, not just a week or so. For me, in Canada, in 2022, the hard rollup was $1150 from the factory, but as a dealer added accessory was about $1700. I ended up paying about 1200.

At this point in time, +3 months I think that you will have to live with it or buy a new one on your own ( do your research ), and then try to sell yours.
