Hello all, I have yet another post on tonneau covers to add to the forum.

Only this time I'm seeking advice/validation on my situation.

When I ordered my truck, the dealer said the tri-fold tonneau cover from ford could hold the order up. Weather was going to get bad soon, and my wife's car sucks to drive in the snow. (Open diff fwd). so i couldn't afford any delays. I said no problem we can order it through the dealer.

Fast forwards to January and my truck comes in. Great. Dealer gets the winter tires and tonneau cover all set up for me.

When I show up to pick it up, not only is it not a ford oem cover but it's a triad 2 fold. On a 4.5 foot bed.

Okay, no problem I thought. I'll live with it and see how it goes.

Well so far it's been crap. I've had to take it off 3 times completely in the last month to use my bed, because who puts a 2 fold on a 4.5 foot bed? Folded back my usable space is 3 feet?! the hardware is jank and I'm already missing pieces, it seals well enough, but I'm using the bed less like a trunk than I originally anticipated. I paid 1200$ canadian loonies for this crap expecting a ford tri fold and got this crap.

Now 2 questions,

1. Am I justified in my frustration at not getting an oem cover or did the dealer do me a favor in some roundabout way?
2. Is it worth it to sell this turd and try finding someone selling the oem ford cover?

Just very frustrated at this.

I wish I could answer your question and I am sorry you are having an unpleasant experience. I myself am waiting on RealTruck to ship my tonneau cover. A BAK Revolver. I definitely wanted a roll up as opposed to a tri-fold and a bi-fold sounds even worse.

Good Luck.

The Tonneau cover is such a individual thing. Hard roll-up, soft roll-up, soft tri-fold, hard tri-fold, tri-folds that fold-up flat against the rear window, etc.

Also, the quality is all over the place between all of the above mentioned. I would look at selling the one you have and using the money towards one that is more funtional for your needs. Getting a propert tonneau cover is like trying to buy shoes without being able to try them on first........you won't know if they will fit right till you actually wear them.

Personally, I don't think you are justified in your frustration at not getting an OEM cover because you understood what you were buying at the time of purchase.

This is a tough pill of "my dealer said" to swallow. There was no hold up for an OEM tonneau cover and it would not have held up your order.

I would find the trifold (or whatever style you like) and purchase it. Then I would basically give your old one away to get rid of it, or just throw it out.

It is a sunk cost now. Don't let it bug you. Buy the new one and get the truck right.

So sorry to read of your issue and frustration. Many including myself removed the tonneau cover on the order to speed up the timeline to get the truck.

I can't tell you which one to buy. I can tell you I opted for a hard trifold tonneau cover from Amazon. That was about a year ago, it was $360 delivered. I'm happy with it, so far. I've only had to fold it up, without removing once or twice. I have 4 trailers so for large items I usually use a trailer and a loader with pallet forks to remove it

Easy to fold up, or to remove it offers security to items I keep in the bed and items I need to haul. It also keeps snow and debris out of the bed. For the price I paid I can easily throw it away and replace if needed, was my reasoning.

Hope you find what you are looking for and enjoy it as well as the truck.

But that's exactly why I'm frustrated. At no point did the dealer say or imply they were putting a 3rd party cover on my truck. They just slapped a price on the total cost that was the same as the OEM cover.

I incorrectly assumed that a ford dealer, selling me a ford truck, would charge me exactly the same as a ford oem cover, and put a ford accessory on it. Especially since I asked them specifically for a tri-fold and asked if the price would be different if I ordered on the truck or through the dealer, to which they assured me the dealer price would be the same.
In fact I literally had to walk past a rack advertising "ford original accessories" showcasing all their OEM tonneau cover options on the way to the managers office to sign the paperwork so why shouldn't I assume I'd be getting an oem cover?

To me it feels like the dealer forgot my truck was coming in, forgot to order the tonneau cover for it and scrambled last minute to grab whatever was in stock nearby to slap on my truck and gave me this pos that nobody wants.

Sure, but you were aware it was a two-fold non-OEM cover at purchase correct? Your dealer sounds incompetent at best, or shady at worst - but if you were aware of what you were purchasing that is on you and not the dealer. You could have refused and said the OEM tri-fold is the only cover you want.

Regardless - I would just look forward and find one you like and purchase it. Everything else is behind you and a sunk cost not worth any additional emotional investment.

Nope. They just added a $1200 cad surcharge to the price of the vehicle under "accessories". There was no discussion or paperwork prior to me picking up the truck that would imply it's a 3rd party 2 fold.

So when did you realize it wasn’t the OEM Trifold?

I'll bet it was marketed as a "trifold"

That's total crap. Return it and demand a full refund. I've never heard of a Bi-Fold Cover.

My Tri-Fold cover was installed by the Dealer and is fully Ford branded. And I'm in Canada as well.

unfortunately my dumb ass thought it would be fine so I tried living with it for 3 months. Well past the "return" date. I might see if the dealer will do an exchange or something and maybe I can get some money back but I think I'd have better luck trying to beat a monkey in a poo flinging contest.
