Imagine I have a load of beef to move from Omaha to Chicago. I have a look up table and the truck drivers have the same look up table.
Lots of disagreement in this thread. A friend of family needed fresh meat delivered from Omaha to central MA twice/week. He paid a bonus to a particular “big” refrigerated truck company for each hour they could beat the time. Money was lost if late. He even paid any fines. Those were the days haha.
On the other hand, I drove leased Ryder, Hertz-Penske, and even U-haul and “all” of them had governors. Also hazards should go on when lugging up the hills.
both of these scenarios cause accidents. Generally speed kills but good driving has better reaction time to slower traffic. Slow driving incites road rage in people. Bright red cars have the most accidents. Whatever you need to back your reasoning, you can find it on the web.

It takes hundreds of bolts to put a vehicle together but just one nut to scatter it all over the highway.
That's poetry right there.

I agree with you. If everything is pristine and the brakes are garbage then it's all for nothing.

I really need to do rough drafts for this crowd. What I should have said is "the most important maintenance item for your engine in the interest of longevity."

Glad you're a member of this site. I use it like it was a couple of friends sitting in the garage working on a project and having a good time busting each other's chops when someone misspeaks.

I appreciate that. It's the vibe I get too.

I just now realized why my son is so good at razing me. He grew watching me with my buds!

On state roads, they have the power.
On Interstates, which I think the state only has three, not so much.
Nope. Colorado is a "Rogue" nation. They do as they please there. My friend the Trooper says can write that citation on any road. States can set the speed limits on any section, including Interstate highways.

Yes, in Colorado, you can be ticketed for "impeding traffic" (C.R.S. 42-4-1103) on an interstate even if you are doing the posted speed limit.

While speeding is illegal, driving too slowly for the surrounding flow of traffic—especially in the left lane—is also a violation in Colorado.
KRDO +1

Key Colorado Traffic Laws
  • Impeding Traffic (C.R.S. 42-4-1103): No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable forward movement of traffic. This law allows officers to ticket drivers who are going "too slow" compared to the flow of traffic, even if that flow is above the posted speed limit, as it creates a bottleneck.
  • Left Lane Law (C.R.S. 42-4-1013): On highways with 65 mph or faster speed limits, the far-left lane is a designated passing lane. Slower traffic is required to move to the right-hand lane. "Camping" in the left lane, even at the speed limit, can result in a citation.
  • Exceptions: If driving slow is necessary for safe operation (e.g., severe weather) or if traffic is too congested to move over, this usually does not apply.
    FindLaw +6

Consequences
  • Fines: Impeding traffic citations can result in fines ranging from $50 to $200.
  • Points: Driving too slowly can result in 2 to 3 points being added to your driver's license.
  • Left Lane Violation: A ticket for improper left-lane usage can be $41.20+ and 3 points (can be reduced to 2 if paid within 20 days).

    flanagan.law +2

What the Law Says
Colorado State Patrol advises that if you are in the left lane and want to drive at the exact speed limit, you must move to the right if you are holding up other cars. The law focuses on whether your speed blocks the "normal and reasonable" flow of traffic, not just the posted minimum.

Love that movie! Spielberg at his best
Yep! "Duel", 1971 with Dennis Weaver being chased by what appeared to be a ghost truck (or something!) A classic a lot of us old timers remember.

I suppose states can do whatever they want on STATE or county roads.

On interstates where there is ALWAYS two lanes per side, minimum, the law states you must be able to travel within 30 MPH of the posted limit in the right most lane. With a permit and escort, slower. (IE house movers)
There are no federal speed laws that apply to interstates.
Speed limits are set by individual states.
The National Maximum Speed Limit was repealed in 1995, allowing states to determine their own speed limits. In California, the speed limit approaching Arizona is 65, and in AZ it's 75 on the same road.
As far as fuel savings, any company can set whatever limit they want on their drivers, but as I often travel on one of the busiest east - west travel corridors in the western USA, trucks doing 55 on I-40 where the speed limit is 75 are about as common as unicorns.

Hmmmm.... Bright red cars are usually traveling faster!!!
lol I once thought about getting a Buick Rainier (twin to the last of the Jimmys, Saab 9-7X, original Trailblazer, last Olds Bravada) because it was the least ticketed vehicle on the road for many years and you could get one with the 5.3 Vortec V8.

Although Car and Driver always claimed the best "stealth speed machine" was a light grey V6 powered minivan slightly dusty but not too dirty. Completely invisible to cops.

Yeppers.
In the late 90's I enjoyed I-90 through Montana with my Taurus SHO. With a Speed Limit of Reasonable and Prudent. I saw 150 a few times on the Montanabahn 😁😁

A factor in the risk / speed equation is that severe accidents are very often caused by vehicles with a differential in speed. A group of vehicles going 75 is safer than a mix of faster cars passing slower cars. This has been proven in numerous studies and reveals that California's 55 for trucks and 65 for cars, for instance, is just plain stupid.

A driver at the speed limit coming up on a driver significantly slower requires the overtaking driver to slow down or pass.
That's an accident opportunity, especially in these days of distracted drivers.

It's especially worse when that "safe" driver passes an even "safer" driver and causes a chain reaction behind them. That's why a driver traveling too slowly for conditions can get a ticket.

Traffic officers don't like the consequences and the paperwork they have to deal with.

So does driving in traffic jams and clogged highways “increase” a hybrids MPG? I occasionally would go home “the long way” after work and enjoy the ride.
Yes it does:
Ford Maverick This single tip saves 20% gas! 1773935330581-d

Despite wanting to drive a couple over, I averaged 22ish MPG for the day. I think I spent more time on the brake pedal thatn the accelerator pedal. I don't like driving to/from San Fransisco.

My sister had a boyfriend in the Navy who drove frequently from California to the Navy Information Operations Command in Aurora, Colorado.
He shoehorned a Ford 427 into his British 2 seater to make for a faster commute.
At the time, there were no Colorado speed limits either at the time according to him.

After doing 150, when you slow down to 75 it feels like you can walk along at the same speed...

Any link to the "numerous studies" that "reveals" lower speed limits for semis is "stupid?"
No you don't, because that's not the problem.
The actual biggest problem is folks going 80+ coming up on a cluster of traffic, swerve down to the right/slow lanes to try and pass everyone and cut in front of trucks causing chaos and accidents.

So how has Germany had unlimited speed + extremely safe Autobahns for nearly 100 years?!
-- Because on the Autobahn, you are NOT allowed to pass on the right.
