this is because of the epa environmental regulations. the gubbt screws everything up. but basically mpg requirements get a break with a larger footprint. thats why the mav is big and small single cab trucks stopped existing. and also why the new ram in south america and other small, international trucks etc cant come to the usa. it isnt a hard ban but, companies pay fines for being over, so it's an effective ask of how much is it worth. usually its not.

only the govt could force cars to be bigger with the intent of them getting more mpg lol

supposedly ev's dont have the mpg requirement so a small truck couild again exist. but from the looks of things it could take years and cost an arm and leg if it ever happens. and i'm sure before long the epa will come up with something to ban small ev's and begin raising ev prices even higher, maybe miles per kwh and begin requiring way more than is possible. my dad just got a 700 electric bill no joke. green energy is here for sure.

Many AWD/4x4 vehicles, including my friend's Colorado, a 2018 Crosstreck I test drove with my daughter yesterday, and my 2011 Ranger company vehicle, have very shallow foot wells. I'm guessing this is to allow for higher ground clearance. I'm only 6' tall, but I have long legs. When I get into those vehicles, it is super uncomfortable, because it feels like I'm sitting on the floor. It makes the vehicle feel much smaller than it really is. Our Mavericks were designed far better, with a much deeper foot well. If not for this, there's no way I could drive, enter, and exit it comfortably. BTW, we didn't get out of the lot during the test-drive when I told my daughter to let me out. I'd rather walk everywhere for the rest of my life than ride in that POS. UNCONDITIONAL love-It's what makes Subaru Subaru.

Agreed :D
naturally deeper foot well is a function of a unibody, upright seating figures in. rather than parking a body on top of a frame the passenger compartment is built into and is part of what serves as the frame.

for those who think a unibody is weak think big block Mustangs Camaros Cudas all unibody. the way these Mavericks handle front and side impact is pretty impressive.
Rear impact needs some work. :sneaky:

Here's the way I look at it. If you can see the whole roof line, than it's a small truck. The problem with modern trucks is how excessively big they've gotten, even mid-sizers. You can't see the roof on any of them and when it comes to maintenance, you literally need to either get a multi-step ladder, hop on one of the tires, climb in the bed, or step on your running boards (if equipped) just to work on the roof! Same goes for the windshield. The fact that I can reach my whole Maverick without any assistance is a treat and truly shows that for modern standards, it really is a small truck. What's funny is how comparably sized it is to full-size trucks of old. I find it hilarious that 90s F-150s or first-gen Tundras were considered big and full-sized but today, they're small. As a result, you can see the roofs. But that's how they should be. You shouldn't have to climb into your truck in the first place.

This. Exactly. The Mav had/has appeal to older drivers that FORD failed to anticipate, and I think this factor is a big part of it. I am too damned old to be climbing into a truck anymore.

Well as far as my usual town run goes its big. I usually bring 15 gallons of water jugs(2s and 3s), 3 peoples worth of laundry, a week or so worth of groceries, 2 dogs(50 and 60lb), 2 propane tanks, and my wife Josi. Normally we take either our 96 Bronco or Our 93 jeep Grand Cherokee. Neither are considered small, but not huge either. Both 5 seaters with fair cargo space behind. We normally have seats folded or moved for more versatile room. Often the laundry goes on top of the vehicle if we take the dogs, and if we take propane sometimes we dont even take them. But with the Maverick the dogs had most of the bed to themselves minus the dog ramp and 2 propane bottles. The rear seat swallowed all the laundry and groceries while the rear floor fit all the water. A big costco trip may take up a little room for the dogs but I still think they will have more room than usual for sure.

I know this is crazy but I'm coming from a 10K subcompact car. I can't get over how luxurious it feels compare to my current vehicle. Now it just has to show up at the dealership so I can pick it up
I feel the same way about mine, luxurious is the right word, especially in comparison to my vinyl bench seated old Ranger. I feel "rich" when I'm sitting in my Mav.

....as you run your fingers across that fine Corinthian plastic. ;)

Honestly, I bought my Maverick because I was tired of having multiple vehicles to do different things and I couldn't transport people in any of those (Mustang GT, Porsche Cayman, and Chevy Silverado). I like that I can actually reach into the bed without stepping on the wheel or getting into the back of it. I like that it has a fair amount of power for a four cylinder turbo, though I really wish they would have offered a manual or at least a paddle shifting capability, and I REALLY wish they would have learned their lesson after the S197 Mustangs and all the plastic in the interior. It was one of the biggest complaints they received from that vehicle and why they upgraded the interior on the 2015+ models. Fine if the XL comes with plastic, but my Lariat should have had soft touch panels.

I'd guess that few of you ever drove a truly small truck:
2023 Ford Mav: 200 X 73 X 69, wheelbase 121
1972 Chevy LUV: 174 X 63 X 59, wheelbase 104.3

1972 saw the gasoline shortages and small was the thing of the day
Days of the Courier

Had fun with it, but it was pretty useless as a truck
I didn't own a pickup since 1994 when I sold my bought used Chevy Luv which replaced my older bought used Datsun which needed refurbing and since I was 78 and had given up waiting for a small fuel efficient pickup, ordered a Maverick Hybrid which "Will Do Until a Small Fuel Efficient Pickup Becomes Available"! Now I am thinking, being returned not wanting to get over 50 miles from the nest, and going on 81 could make an electric tricycle with a 40"x60" bed trailer. I think I could put it together for $10-$12K including at home solar panels and second drive motor to pull loaded trailer! ????

Now, granted, I'm moving from a 2008 Ranger single cab, but MY GOD, after picking up my truck yesterday I can't get over how HUGE it feels! Interior cabin feel is enormous, cavernous in comparison even to my old Honda CR-V. Even the exterior "feels" big to me, I went to apply a quick spray wax yesterday afternoon, having done the same job on my Ranger the weekend before, and it seemed like twice the work, area to cover. It's just fascinating, I'd previously seen a lot of pictures on here with side by side comparisons of the old rangers and the Maverick, I wasn't prepared for how much larger this vehicle would feel.

Don't get me wrong, I love every inch of it!! But for anybody who's thinking this is a teensy truck, they've got a reality check coming.
I agree. I took my wife for a test drive in all three Ford trucks. She said she liked the Maverick best AND even commented that it felt roomier than the Ranger.

1994 F-150 next to 2023 Maverick. The F-150 has an 8' bed but otherwise, the sizes are comperable.

I am so glad you finally got your Maverick. I hope it is all that you thought it would be.

It's not a small truck. It's just that full-sized trucks have gotten so ridiculously huge that, compared to today's F-150, Silverados, etc., it seems small to some people.

Compared to small trucks that were actually small a few decades ago, the Maverick is big.
Yeah, I like the big bed but I don't like driving, parking, or gassing the big boys. And my Maverick handles great.

The thing is, todays trucks have just become behemoths. I got my drivers license in 1976, and the "full size" F-100 (no F-150 yet) was basically the same size as the Maverick is today. I've owned F-150's and Tundra's in the past and liked them all. They are just way more truck than I need anymore. One of the primary reasons I bought the Mav was because is would actually fit in my garage ;)

in addition to similar Size, both F100 and Maverick have quirky gear selectors. F100 ”three on the tree” is iconic.
