sorry for coming late to party, but just got my Mav. So to clarify, an XLT does not come with locking mechanism, because there seems to be some kind of bracket attached?

I had the tailgate stolen off my Nissan pickup years ago. I never thought about such a thing until it happened. I got a guard after I got my new tailgate. and later, when I got another pickup, that was one of the first things I got for it. I've got an XLT and didn't think it necessary with the locking tailgate. But, for about $20, I'm thinking it might be good insurance. Any opinions as to the need with a locking tailgate?

That Nissan tailgate probably fits multiple models and years of PU. The Maverick has exactly 1 application. I would think the market for stolen catalytic converters would be 1000% larger than for tailgates...

Here is one of the best:

Picture grabbed from here: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mcg-76029?seid=srese2&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Brands+|+M&utm_term=4582077271720335&utm_content=GSAPI+5ba28899ae347

Please note the amount Summit is charging for it: $17.99. Don't waste your time or money with Ford. Buy this one and save money. You may even be able to find it cheaper elsewhere. Summit isn't always the cheapest place to shop.
First off, thank you.

Found that model number on Amazon. Says it doesn't fit the Mav.

What are your thoughts/experience?

In Texas it's been known for people to find theirs at a pawn shop though most no longer will accept them. Then most thief's moved to catalytic converters.

I just want to add what this thing actually does. If you leave your tailgate open and/or unlocked, anyone with tools can disconnect it and walk off with it. This thing covers the bolt with a thing you need a special tool to get off. I doubt the meth heads doing this are picking locks.

As soon as people start rear-ending Mavericks, tailgates will be in demand.

Tailgate theft is common in Mexico in large cities. I can attest to two different friends (ok one a friend, one just an acquintance), Canadians from Alberta, having their tailgates stolen from their very late model fullsize pickups. Pickups were so long that they couldn't close the gates of their small mexican carports. So, with the tailgates literally sticking out of the carports; easy theft. This occured both times in the same city: Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. (where the Mavericks are made)

I just read this thread. Do not do what that police officer recommended and put the last four of your social on your tailgate. At best, put your VIN on it, but NEVER put your SSN on anything.

I got a tailgate lock with some other items on here (Ford accessory made by McGuard). thought it was a good idea, but had to remove the bracket on the tailgate (that keeps the tailgate from being removed without tools) to put it on. The McGuard has the key which will make it tougher to remove than just the bracket that came with the truck

I have a 2011 F250 in Miami and have had my tailgate stolen twice! The Tail Gate lock is useless you can break the mechanism with a hard turn of the screwdriver. People started buying tailgate locks so the thieves were taking a small sledgehammer and a tire iron or rod and breaking off the piece that the tailgate goes into causing you to have that repaired as well. The police said they get the tailgate off in seconds. I'm waiting on my Maverick to be delivered and am thinking about putting a tracking device in the tailgate. (Maybe Ford has better Locks on the Maverick?)

Interesting. I was considering on because I've known a few who had theirs stolen. One was a coworker and they got his Raptor tailgate and taillights. Had to be several weeks in a rental because he couldn't legally drive it. With replacement and rental it was a couple thousand bucks.

You must not realize how easy lock-picking is. I do it as a hobby and it scares me sometimes. It's all about layers of protection. If someone has enough time and/or willpower, they will get it anyway. This is to slow down or discourage the slightly honest or mostly scared folks.
Perhaps, but tailgate theft is more about opportunity. If its locked, they would just go to the next truck. Same with people that door check.
