XLT models will lock the tailgate so it cannot be opened.(without extra damaging effort) It is locked when the doors are locked by the remote or the drivers door switch. The hinge lock will slow down a thief when the tailgate is left unlocked or lowered. Neither are theft-proof but will deter the casual opportunist.I had the tailgate stolen off my Nissan pickup years ago. I never thought about such a thing until it happened. I got a guard after I got my new tailgate. and later, when I got another pickup, that was one of the first things I got for it. I've got an XLT and didn't think it necessary with the locking tailgate. But, for about $20, I'm thinking it might be good insurance. Any opinions as to the need with a locking tailgate?
