I'm guessing this isn't the Ranger you're talking about? 😁

I didn't realize the early F-100's were called Rangers. I kept seeing them on Craig's list when I was looking for what I thought of as a "Ranger", and figured it was just people trying to get more looks at their old trucks!

I sold my 87 Ranger 2.8L 2WD XLT with 744k mostly-highway miles on it. You could turn the engine over with one hand, but it passed the emissions test when sold. That German V6 engine and Japanese manual transmission never failed me, but I put a couple of rear-ends and 3 driveshafts into it over that many miles.

Started my Ford pickup journey with a Courier, the got a 1st-gen Ranger in the first year or 2 after they were introduced. Probably 20+ vehicles since then, I'd have to go thru a lot of shoeboxes of pictures to find a photo of it.

I had two first generation Rangers, each around 100,000 miles. 4 cylinder, manual, RWD, 30 mpg. There are certainly Ranger owners out there with a half million miles or more on the odometer.

It was a crude, utilitarian punishment box. And that was fine by me. Because it was dirt cheap up front. Rangers did get expensive after 75,000 miles or so. New shocks. New brakes. All the cheap Ford bits and pieces started failing one after another. But the thousands in maintenance later in vehicle life was OK because of the stupidly low starting price.

That truck had horrible driving manners and was good for one thing and one reason only. Cheap functionality.

I did a paper exercise a year ago - it's on a thread out there somewhere. My loaded Maverick XLT, adjusted for content, is just as cheap as those old shit box Rangers (I ran the numbers through the BLS inflation calculator). But what you get is astonishingly better.

Anyone whining about the Maverick's price, even after the recent increases, IMHO, is an imbecile. Numbers don't lie. I'm not a Maverick fanboy - I consider it a fat bloated whale. But I'll defend what you get for your money any day.

I had a 1990 Ranger. 2WD, 5 speed stick, 4 cyl. It was a great little truck. I’d have gladly driven it to the ends of the earth of someone didn’t broadside me and send me spinning into a field, basically ripping half the sheet metal off one side of my pick. The sad part is it kept running just fine afterwards. Just looked like hell.

I still have mine - leaks like a sieve when it rains but it is a workhorse and in my opinion one of the best looking Ford trucks ever made!
