The backup camera is useless when the tailgate is down. Is there a solution?

Before, it was easier to see out the back of things, and also vehicles were lower to the ground.
But trucks have always had beds where things could be loaded in front of the rear window... ;)

No problem I see how that can be confusing, I just mentioned that because the topic was about not having one with the tailgate down. The op said he would not have bought one if he had know that. So I am actually curious if there are any trucks out there with one (I think the 2024 F350 did but was removed from the vehicles shortly after)

Yes it has a backup camera just not one when the tailgate is down.
Wait,
I have 2023 F350 Platinum
Here is my truck next to my Maverick. The two rear cameras are circled.

The below article pertains to 2025.
I doubt they removed it for one year.

Sorry it was the 2024 F350 with one in the top of the tailgate so when it was down it worked like the camera in the tailgate by the handle.

Again, if only I had known before I bought my 2025 Maverick Lariat.

Is there a Ford OEM or aftermarket auxiliary backup camera for use when the tailgate is down? Every time I go to the transfer station!
You don't know that your tailgate is (from the factory) made to go to a halfway down position?
There's a post made for that and it's right below the one just like it that is holding your tailgate now. It might show the trailer ball and the hitch coming at it.

But it was still easier to see out of them. The doors and pillars were thinner, and you didn't sit so high off the ground. A lot more space behind the truck is invisible because you're higher off the ground now.

I can’t hold it back any longer, It’s getting painful now.
No NOooze no no no,
Aww I give up.

We did everyfuckingthing with our trucks. I’ve hooked up trailers from 4’x6’ single axles to 52 foot goose necks.

Only dented one license plate and it was an improvement.

Here comes the No’s
No A/C
No power windows,
No Automatic trannies. Hey we didn’t have males that dressed like females,
Tranny-Transmission.

And no camera’s.
I never hit anything,

We’re all turning into pus,,,,
Err as you were, Wimps ! Yeah that’s it !

Soon we’ll all have auto drive. And loose even more skills.
I can feel the loss of neck movement range BECAUSE of my back up camera,
I shit you not.

Ok rants over.

Hooking up trailers to an M series or to a Hum V with full nuclear curtains in place.
Made easy with a spotter.
We didn’t need no stinkin’ back up cameras.

We were MEN doing MAN stuff.
Jeez~o~Pete, what happened to us ?

Every truck I've owned has had an obstructed view out the back. Tool box, headache rack, topper with no windows, etc. In fact, I've removed the rearview on almost every truck I've owned since they're effectively useless with an obstructed view, and they aren't required by law on trucks anyway.

I just got those stick-on convex blind spot mirrors. With those, my blind spot is basically a "V" extending about 10 feet behind the vehicle. I just look at the mirrors, and when I get close to whatever I'm backing up against, the ole "GOAL" (Get Out And Look).

But it was still easier to see out of them. The doors and pillars were thinner, and you didn't sit so high off the ground. A lot more space behind the truck is invisible because you're higher off the ground now.
I guess it's all about perspective. When I drove a Maverick, I felt like I was sitting on the ground.

I know on my F-250 my rear cameras....4 different views...can be turned on when the truck is going forward. So I can see, the bed, hitch, wide angle off the back...etc. I haven't tried this yet...BUT...will it allow you to switch to the third brake light camera when the truck is in reverse...OR....does it only default to the camera by the tailgate handle...IN REVERSE. If it did work....when the tailgate was down you could move the view up to the third brake light rear facing camera to at least see behind you when the tailgate is down. Just throwing it out there. I'll test it tomorrow.
