I'm getting 2 E-bikes, they are on the heavier side, about 85lbs with the battery. What do you use to haul your e-bikes. The heavy duty hitch carrier are a little bit too pricey for me, plus I have a pickup bed.

I'm not sure about using tailgate mats. I saw some damaged Ford tailgates on some cheaper Amazon brands... I wonder i the better brands will prevent tailgate dents.

I could use fork mounts and screw them on 2x4s, but will they be too heavy for them?

85 lb is nothing. A 2x4 should easily handle the weight since most will be on the rear tire anyway if you are thinking of putting the fork mount toward the front of the bed.

Leave your tailgate down, and forget the stupid mat. Tie the bikes down, and go.

I like this idea myself.

85 pounds is an extremely heavy e-bike so I assume you're going to want a ramp like you would need for a dirtbike and to load them directly in the bed. I am not aware of any bicycling hitch racks that are rated for that kind of weight. (I have seen single dirtbike hitch racks like that, so it's possible I am wrong and something does exist.)

At that point then, yes, a front tire rack like picture above is very helpful and you will want to use ratchet straps. Use at least 2 per bike, and going back to my MX days I would feel a lot better about 4 per bike.
