Long story that I'll try to make short. A couple of days ago I was at a stoplight. For a change I was using the stop start because this light is sometimes long. After I sat there waiting for the light to turn green, just as the light was changing here comes an 18 wheeler turning right into my lane. When I saw I couldn't go forward on green I tried to quickly start the engine and nothing worked. Then, I turned off the stop-start and the truck would crank again. For about 15 seconds I thought I would be crushed by the big truck. Finally, I could put it in reverse and get out of the way. So much for having a green light! Stay safe out there! You never know what will happen on the road.

All "Stop/Start" accomplishes is the early death of your actual starter.

instead of a back and forth lets cut to the bone of the matter ;)

Do stop-start systems wear out your car's starter?

.............
And there you have it: the full technical explanation of why you don't need to worry about starter motors wearing out prematurely due to stop-start systems.

Cheers

I’ve made a habit of cutting it off as soon as I put it in gear. I don’t even think about it anymore, just do it. I think does way more harm than good.

That article makes a lot of assumptions. Does every manufacturer make the changes they claim? Plus it is from "Green Car Reports" which I never heard of. Why would the manufacturer rep refuse to give their name?

I rarely pay attention to articles like that. My wife and I were just discussing this, that for every article you find that says it's okay or it's good, I can find one that says it's not okay and it's bad. And that goes for almost everything. Stop start, changing your oil after the break-in, how to break in your vehicle engine, vaccines, climate change, whatever the subject is. There will be articles that say do this and another that says you don't need to do that. Heck just look on threads on MTc and you'll see posters doing the same thing.

And the premature starter wear issue isn't on hybrids since the electric motor spins the engine.

If I lived in a traffic congested area I might have left this enabled. Since I avoid such areas like the plague, it was the first thing I disabled in Forscan. I'm pretty doubtful that doing so will negatively affect the air quality, locally or globally.

I don't agree with this. I have now disconnected this feature for the second time. What's better, saving a little bit of gas or getting into a wreck?

I spend most of my time wrenching on my company’s trucks instead of driving them nowadays, but I still see a lot out there. Glad nothing happened, and I’m still adamant about shutting off that stupid auto start/stop as soon as I turn the key. It scares the crap out of me when I forget to hit the button and the truck dies at an intersection

This is a nice explanation of why the more expensive starter probably doesn't need to be worried about on it's own.

But the extra level of complexity to allow the AS/AS system to work - yikes.

Caveat too - is the Ford hardware as nice as the Toyota stuff?

I do not worry about the starter. As a salesman to Ford Lima, Ohio engine plant I drove Fords. During the day I stared my engine 15-20 times. Three vehicles were driven over 100,000 miles each without a starter probelem.
As my city has mostly short interval traffic lights, I often turn it off when driving "around town."
