uhhh... what? I'm not referencing the price. I mean the truck was the first small subcompact truck in years! It went small while other brands have increased in size. It acted like a 'maverick' in how it was designed.
Sorry, I mean this with respect but the word play is going over your head or your hyper focused on this being meaningful/related/attached to something historic about Ford.
I was joking with it, don't take it too seriously.

But the reason why the initial release price was $19,995 it was a reference to the original Maverick. My post above has been updated facts from a Ford Performance article.. Ford was paying an homage to the Maverick nameplate and spirit of the original.

Not to take away from your fondness of the original car, but what I read in the article is that the reason the the price was $19,995 is because that number is what passes for a "value price," just as $1,995 did 50 years ago. The way I see it, using a price one digit off is a coincidence, and rehashing names is nothing new amongst any mainstream automaker (see Blazer, Integra, Bronco - the only difference is that those are all mostly similar vehicle types as their predecessors...).

If they'd called the little truck a Pinto, I would like it just the same, and not read too much into it (except I would make sure I knew where the fuel tank was positioned!) But if a more dramatic backstory helps others' appreciation, go for it.

As others said, it's a play on words.
When referencing animals associated with the word maverick, it is more than likely referring to a cow/calf not a horse. Ford has clearly used horse terms for other cars.
IMHO, Ford used the name Maverick because this truck is a very different vehicle compared to industry standards for trucks. Ford is going against the grain, doing their own thing... they are being Mavericks.
To me that kind of thinking is more relatable to TopGun than a cow or horse. Neither animal being a good representation of our trucks.

TLDR: I think it's more fun to make a Maverick/TopGun reference than an animal. But all are valid things to do because they are all fun.

Agreed, ever since I’ve had my truck and I tell them it’s a Maverick they say ohh yea kinda like the movie Top Gun. I think more people relate it to the movie than a horse. Not being a stick in the mud, just my two cents. I like the idea though. Maybe naval aviator magnets for the tailgate? lol

Hot take: Even though I am old enough to remember its existence, personally I have zero sentimental attachment to that car and would not associate it with my truck at all.

Judging by the number of people around here with "Goose" stickers on their trucks, James Garner avatars, and so on - I am not sure there needs to be any lineage or logic applied whatsoever. But to each their own.

Well I guess I brought out all the naysayers, I and my wife thinks that it is a cute thing to do, kinda like the ducks and jeeps, why ducks and jeeps?
I was stopped at the gas station today and next to me was another Maverick owner, I offered the toy horse to him and he said because of the Maverick truck and I said yes, he said he thinks of a horse when thinks of Maverick.

I'm no professor, but did a bit of Googling the term Maverick as it applies to animals and a LOT of people associate Maverick with horses. It may be wrong, but when enough of us are wrong, it becomes right.
You keep passing out those tiny plastic horses. I'd proudly display one on my dashboard.

I like the idea, but how does one "give" them out? I rarely see a Maverick sitting in a parking lot; much more likely to see one on the road. Then what?
I usually just wave and if that's acknowledged, I'll do a thumbs up and smile conspiratorially. I admit it's a bit disappointing when the other owner doesn't wave back or just gets a "WTH?" look on his face. I have a habit of looking out for other Mavericks when I'm driving, mainly because I very much like how the truck looks and when I'm driving, I can't see mine. LOL. I like driving by store fronts. Call me odd, but I bet I'm not the only one.

Poor Stoogedude just wanted to share a good gesture toward other Maverick owners and somehow this got into disagreements about "Maverick". My two cents: Ford needed a name and Maverick was a great sounding one. The truck fits the definition of 'maverick' as it doesn't conform to the current big truck trend. I think the name is perfect.

This was "traumatic" as a child, standing in the store looking at the little license plates for your bike and never seeing you name spelled right.

It's a fun name perfect for a fun truck. James Garner reference goes back to the 50's. Even back then the term was in use for about 100 years.
