It's a fun name perfect for a fun truck. James Garner reference goes back to the 50's. Even back then the term was in use for about 100 years.Hot take: Even though I am old enough to remember its existence, personally I have zero sentimental attachment to that car and would not associate it with my truck at all.
Judging by the number of people around here with "Goose" stickers on their trucks, James Garner avatars, and so on - I am not sure there needs to be any lineage or logic applied whatsoever. But to each their own.
