I would do that around 5 mph with someone watching it every foot I drove moving it maybe a few hundred yards max.

Well, sure. That's why I called it a hack.

Of course, he could lay it over the cab and strap it to the front and back bumpers but there might be some problems there too. I only found it interesting as a desperate measure to get something home. I have solutions for situations like that like my flatbed trailer and my 6' hitch extender and racks but sometimes we have to improvise and perfection is elusive.

I was able to use my rear window for a couple of 2x 4s once but that's about all it would fit. I saw a kit somewhere that turned the back window into a hatch which opens up all kinds of possibilities. Even making it possible to sleep in the back with a bunk. Like a small Chevy Avalanche.

Not horrible. Just Keep it slow.

Not illegal either, as long as it's not littering as it goes and is 4" above the roadway. The shortest production vehicles have about 6" of clearance.

Under 15 mph there is no legal clearance requirement. Adjustable "low riders" may demonstrate at any ground clearance, at 15 mph or under.
(Think parades, car shows, etc.)

I honestly did not at all know that about the Avalanche but still you mention a conversion kit to do this to a Maverick???
