Road bike won’t work with 2x4 hack in the bed of a Maverick

I think you’re overthinking this, the “2x4 hack” is simply that. You know you can just screw another piece of wood to it to extend the mounting position, and give you the clearance you require. No need for complicated and expensive mounting options.

Have you considerd diagonal? Cock the front whell like the Jeep pic, cinch down the rim and go?

Right, Or even raise the mounting point higher like in the photo so that the handle bars clear the window and rear cab.

This is how I haul mine in my Sport Trac. Was hoping to do the same in the Maverick.

I use this mounted to the side of the bed.

I used to own a Sport Trac. I loved that truck.

I ended up spending some dough on a set of Yakima low profile crossbars and a "roof" bike rack for my Mav. I dont trust others driving behind me to have my 5k bike dangling there like low hanging fruit to be rear ended. So I mount it up on top the bed with the cross bars. For my other bikes / wife / son, I have the hitch rack, but their bikes and my others are not as valuable as my main road bike.

You mounted the skewers on the backside of the board, versus on top, good move. My stem must be just a little longer or my fork more vertical as this still does not allow for rear window clearance. Glad it works for some road bikes.

If you have a road bike the 2x4 with skewers mounted to it and place in the front bed grooves hack won’t work for you . With a road bikes handlebars goes forward from the headset, so the handlebars won’t clear the rear window. You can use a trailer mounted hitch, place one in the rear seat with the seat bottom in the up position, or use another style of rack. I worry about the over the tailgate for a road bike with a carbon fiber for like mine.

Look at YouTube. Tons of videos on diy racks made of 2x wood. Front tire stays on. Tailgate is down.
