Could be worse Santa Cruz bed is 6 inches shorter than the Mav. Main reason I bought a Mav. One poster called me stupid as it's only 6 inches. But on a small bed every inch counts. I certainly knew the bed length before I ordered one.
Yeah I was being super sarcastic. But, yes the Santa Cruz is the perfect comparison. Neither Ford nor Hyundai built these to carry 8' sheets of plywood with the tailgate shut. They fit a niche that slots well below most larger trucks.

Consider a bed extender. Costs about $150 and I installed mine in less than an hour. Would have been faster but it conflicted with the cover and i had to do a work around.

A Hyundai senior VP was interviewed on Motoman recently (about how and why Hyundai is having such an amazing string of successes). He said something interesting near the end - that Hyundai deliberately didn't make the SC look like or work like a truck. It wasn't their design goal. They weren't interested in truck people. They were interested in young city dwellers who wanted to go hiking on weekends. Ergo the "sport activity vehicle" name.

So the SC 48" bed might be too short for Maverick buyers. It's perfect for SC buyers.

I now wonder how many people out there actually do their own gardening and yard work.
Probably the same number who knew the bed length prior to buying. *zing*

This is a annoyance about the Maverick. The bed is 6” too short.

On my way to the dump to rid some yard waste. A cheap ole garden tool fails to fit. Jeez Ford, if one of the target users is homeowners, garden tools should be a consideration.

Why did nobody tell you this before you bought one?

Angle it across the bed.....

bed length – 54.4 inches
bed width – 53.3 inches (42.6 in. at wheelhouse)

Right triangle calculator tells me you have 76.15937 inches to work with if you angle the tool.
No one said there'd be math involved :)

I'm 5'7" and the bed is still a little tall for me (previous '07 Ford Ranger), but I'll put up the imperfections because it is still a nifty little vehicle shaped like a pickup truck. I'm planning on hauling 15 bags of 2 cu. ft. mulch tomorrow. It will be my first time "working" the Mav.
